[Bangkok] Designer Polpat Asavaprapha who is behind modern womenswear label Asava sets up Sava Dining at EmQuartier, and you would expect a restaurant of style and flair.

Located at The Helix Quartier, you can imagine how Sava Dining would be if it was a piece of cloth – elegantly white, balanced by earthy tones, and nautical blue stripped accessories.

The wait staff at Sava Dining wears navy blue uniforms inspired by pyjamas, so that you feel right at home. (Okay, I wonder how many actually still don pyjamas as a sleep gear.)

The fashionista Asavaprapha, often spotted in signature shades and goatee look Instagram, has a mixed parentage of a Thai father and Japanese mother. Growing up in the United States and Italy, he incorporates influences from his multi-cultural growing years into the dishes.

The menu is presented like a photo album. Some items – Chicken Green Curry Baked with Puffy Pastry Dome served with Crunchy Roti (290 baht), Crab Au Gratin ad Mozzarella (340 baht), Chinese Glass Noodle in Spicy and Sour Coriander Sauce (240 baht), Thai Style Risotto with Sea Bass and Caramelised Pork (320 baht) and Spaghetti with Salted Pork (think this is parma ham) sprinkled with Italian Parmesan (340 baht).
Prices were higher than the typical mid-end restaurants though, with most items 200 baht (SGD$8) and above.

There was a home-style dish that we liked – Fish and Shrimp Balls in Spicy and Tangy Sauce served with Poached Morning Glory and Crispy Fish Flakes (B220), A modern, some muted take on Thai street food.

The main, a Capellini with Nham and Thai Sweet Pickled Garlic (290 baht) bordered on being ordinary. Compared on other Thai cafes which serve fusion food, Sava Dining threaded on being more Western and toned down in the heartiness of ingredients and sauces used.

The meal ended with a good note though with a Cha Yen Panna Cotta (180 baht) which I thought managed to bring out the fundamental elements of bitter-sweet taste of Thai Milk Tea and wobbly smoothness of panna cotta.
While Saving Dining is strong in its decor and style-element, a dish or two we tried were neither here nor there, and menu could have a stronger, more definite identity.
