My cafe kakis had a problem, “We run out of places to go to.” How is that even possible? There are about 10 to 20 new cafes opening up in Singapore every month.
But “Same-old, same-old”. These are the same people who braved with me to try more than 250 cafes last year, and our diet consisted nothing more than waffles, eggs benedict, sandwiches, bingsu, and milkshakes. I TOTALLY understand what they mean. (Just for your information, we REALLY go to the cafes when we are doing our guides.)
By the way, I just came back from Seoul and their popular Miss Lee Cafe sold Dosirak, somewhat like Korean packed lunchboxes. “Do you think our local hipster cafes will ever sell chap chye peng?”
“Sure close down”, was our collective answer.
Maybe things will change. My wishlist for cafes during 2016 – less gimmicks, more introduction of local food elements, and not the same-old, same-old.

Free the Robot
118 Telok Ayer Street Singapore 068587 (Telok Ayer MRT)
Opening Hours: 8.30am – 4.30pm (Tues-Sat, closed Mon and Sun)
Sharing the same doors as Bitters and Love is Free the Robot, serving western-style brunch food and coffee in the CBD area. We were recommended the Free the Robot Burger ($12), a homemade beef burger with sunny side up egg, pickles, tomato, melted cheese and bacon, and Surf & Turf Meatballs ($7.5) – mozzarella, tomato, basil on homemade brioche. Food may need some refinement. How about some robot-themed meals?

Dose!
139 Tyrwhitt Road #01-03 Singapore 207557
Tel: +65 91458103
Opening Hours: 11am – 9pm (Mon, Wed – Sun), Closed Tues
So brave. Dose! has an extremely tricky location, diagonally opposite Chye Seng Huat, within walking distance from some other prominent cafes. Dose! is so named because every dose of coffee is measured to maintain the consistency of the beverage served. Blacklist Etude Blend from Perth is used for the coffee, while Chocolate drinks are from Australia’s Grounded Pleasures. We thought we needed to show them some support.

Gallery & Co.
National Gallery #01-05, 1 St. Andrew’s Road Singapore 178957 (City Hall MRT)
Opening Hours: 10am – 7pm (Sun – Thurs), 10am – 10pm (Fri – Sat)
The café within the National Gallery. The café is being taken care of by Plain Vanilla known for their cupcakes. is from Papa Palheta, the Throwback blend which many other cafes are also using. Not that it is any bad, but too much of something, may not be a good thing. Less of that excitement, more of the same predictability. But nice, comfortable space to immerse an afternoon in.

The Coffee Academics in Singapore looks like a café meets science laboratory meets working space.

If you find this hard to find, Saint Pierre Market is outside Tower B, a short walk away from the taxi stand, where Marmalade used to be. My friend almost fainted when she saw the price of the bingsu. $19.30. And that is for a small sized one. The large at $4 extra. Many come for the snow-making machine that would create falling snow in the middle of a round table. How long more is the bingsu craze going to last? Ice Lab (Somerset)
