The opening of SUFOOD at Wheelock Place will provide vegetarians with another option at down town Orchard.
Having met some popularity at its first Singapore outlet at Raffles City, this meat-free concept from Taiwan has launched its second at the basement of Wheelock next to Nam Nam (easily accessible from Ion Orchard as well).
I have actually recommended friends who are vegetarian, or groups looking for a vegetarian-friendly place for a casual meal to SUFOOD, and they came back with rather positive feedback. At least no major complaints.
My perception is there is a lack of variety, or at least awareness for meat-free food in Singapore, and many diners end up being in Chinese vegetarian restaurants known for incorporating mock meats, or Indian restaurants with a separate vegetarian menu.
SUFOOD’s menu is inspired by Italian cuisine, uses basic cooking techniques, and relies on using fresh ingredients. Items in vegan or lacto-ovo style are also available.
For groups, I would suggest having the 8-course set at $29.80++ per person, which include an appetizer, Rosemary Breadstick, Cider, Salad, Soup, Main, Desserts and Drink, considered relatively value-for-money.
Some of the recommended mains include the Star Pizza, Baked Potato Al Funghi, Homemade Vegetable Calzone, Porcini Pasta and Rainbow Baked Pasta.
The disclaimer is that I am consuming this from a ‘meat-lover’s’ point of view, and a vegetarian would have differing opinions all together.
In the most recent meal, I had the Rainbow Baked Pasta ($14) and Zesty Oyster Mushroom Rice ($14) – both newer items on the menu.
The pasta served with many vegetables such as cauliflower, broccoli, cherry radish could do with a zestier tasting tomato sauce, because the dish felt moderately plain-tasting.
Also, the portion was not fantastically huge.
The Mushroom Rice ($14) looked inspired by the Korean Bibimbap, with usage of similar ingredients, and the “savoury spicy sauce” tasted too similar to gochujang though not as peppery and rich.
At the end of meal, my friends and I though filled, thought “something was missing”. Was it meat? Was it because we are too used to rich-tasting flavoursome food?
