The salted egg croissant craze continues in Singapore with Antoinette introducing their version, and we WILL see more and more F&Bs following suit (till we get bored, which may be really soon).
This food-fad first appeared at Urban Bakery in Hong Kong, followed by Le Bread Days Café in Kuala Lumpur, Seven Oaks Bakery Café in Johor Bahru (limited to 3 per person) and Flavour Flings in Singapore (limited to 2 per person). (Read: Flavours Fling Hougang Ave 1)

Just like the food trends (OTT Milkshake, Korean bingsu, Shibuya Toast) in Singapore last year, many cafes will hop on the bandwagon. And we suspect this Salted Egg Croissant craze MAY be a short-lived one.
You will start seeing your Instagram feed flooding with Salted Egg food items of all kinds. (But can we say not EVERYTHING goes with salted egg yolk?)
This time round, Antoinette is hot on their heels in creating their own Salted Egg Yolk Croissants. Note: It is 11:25am on Mon 1st Feb, and the croissants are SOLD OUT.

Antoinette’s Salted Yolk Lava Croissant ($6.50+) created by Chef Pang Kok Keong was made using traditional French method (French butter and dough) to produce a crispy, flaky crust and layering, in the shape of a bull’s horn.
Each bite into the crust was filled with a crunchy and buttery sensation.

The liu sha mix is made with real, natural salted egg yolk, sugar and milk to produce a smooth and flowy texture.
Tasted just like salted eggs mooncake, except in a croissant this time round.

Compared to Flavours Fling, Antoinette’s version has a more savory slant, making the overall taste closer to that of a real salted egg, and not as sweet as the former.
We liked it.

Available at the Penhas outlet starting 1st February, the salted egg croissants will be available at the remaining outlets (Mandarin Gallery and Sofitel) come 10 February 1pm.
Liu Sha or liu kou shui (dripping saliva), or both?
(On an additional note, we hope that our other Singapore cafes will stop blindly copying trends which work, unless they are confident they are better than the rest. It’s a bit late in the game anyway. Why not be bold enough to come out with our own food items, inspired by the local culture? Just saying, no offence to anyone.)
