May is the month for kawaii cartoon cafes. Pompompurin Cafe has just arrived at Orchard Central, while Hello Kitty cafe is set to open at Changi Airport and a pop-up Pokemon Cafe will appear at Bugis Junction.

Some other new foreign cafes with a first Singapore outlet MAY cause a queue.

No, not talking about BAKE Cheese Tart, but Honolulu Café at Centrepoint and Kyushu Pancakes at Novena. Shall wait and see.

Hello Kitty Orchid Garden

Finally (for fans). Take note of the official opening date of Singapore’s 1st Hello Kitty Café… 12 May 2016.

Named as “Hello Kitty Orchid Garden”, the interior and menu will be inspired by Singapore’s national flower.

Local influence will be woven into the menu, which comprises of all-day breakfast fare and an array of Kitty-fied desserts, including gelato sundaes, waffles, pastries and tea cakes.

Located at Terminal 3’s Arrival Hall Central, the cafe will be opened 24/7. (There are also plans for application of Halal certification, making this the possible 1st Halal Hello Kitty Cafe.) Hello Kitty Orchid Garden (Changi Airport T3)

Opening Hours: 11am – 10.30pm (last order 10pm)
Takeaway services are not available

The Pompompurin Café in Singapore has a “Garden City” theme (same same as Hello Kitty), with a signature Pompompurin Gate at the entrance, and Pompompurin and Friends Tree. Though people will rush to sit in the ‘tree houses’.

Food includes Spaghetti Napolitana ($26.99), Mushroom & Bacon Carbonara ($26.99), Taco Rice in a Cup of Friendship ($19.99), Pompompurin’s Coconut Milk Chicken Curry ($17.99) and Pompompurin’s Beef Stroganoff ($18.99).

Cuteness aside, we didn’t come expecting a satisfying meal in terms of taste. A lot of the dishes tasted ‘kiddy’ and might not please the adult palate. Okay lah, was not THAT bad.

Pokémon Café Singapore

This ‘pop-up’ café will take over Everything With Fries at Level 4. The café will sell 12 specialty Pokémon related dishes, and don’t be surprised if you see a Pikachu mascot appearing too. Pokemon Café (Bugis Junction)

Ninja Bowl has taken over the space where Department of Caffeine used to be

While my friends initially had the impression that Ninja Bowl just serves “healthy bowls”, there are other intriguingly sounding brunch items.

These include Gyu & Tama ($17) – mushroom scrambled eggs with 24-hour braised beef cheek, Tonkotsu Spirit ($16) of aburi cha shu and poached eggs (no tonkotsu or spirits in this one), sandwiches, bites such as Bacon Tempura ($10) and Poutine Fries ($14), and cakes at the display counter. Ninja Bowl (Duxton Road)

A friend noted that there are SO MANY salad shops at the CBD area. Seriously a lot.

Just a few shops away from Ninja Bowl is Sprout, serving Salad Bowls such as Ahi Poke Bowl, Beef & Broccoli Bowl and Korean Chicken Bowl – no worries, not deep fried, it’s grilled.

The Shibuya Toast called Shiberty Toast ($16) is offered in 3 different flavours: Classic (sea salt caramel and vanilla ice cream), Rocher (hazelnut and vanilla ice cream) and Matcha (green tea and vanilla ice cream).

We were recommended the Rocher Shiberty Toast ($16) with lots of toppings (chocolates, marshmallow, macaron shell, chocolate fudge) that resembled an Over-The-Top Milkshake. Shiberty Bakes (Owen Road)

This is the 2nd branch of Brew Maison, and we must say we are a little surprised.

There is no stopping for Korean dessert café Nunsongyee 눈송이, which has opened up yet another bingsu shop, this time at Bukit Timah.

The better news is, it is opened 24/7!

The offerings are still similar from when it started, with varieties of Pat Bingsu, Oreo, Choco-Banana, Cheesecae, Injeolmi, Blueberry, Mixed Berries Black Sesame, Strawberry, Coffee, Snow White and the latest addition of Mango Bingsu ($12.90 – $18.90). Nunsongyee (Yuk Tong Ave)
