The purple sweet potato, sometimes referred to as the Japanese or Okinawan sweet potato, has been lauded as a superfood packed with nutrients. (Fun fact: This sweet potato is not related to the potato but is actually in the morning glory family.)
It has a denser royal purple colour than yam (I call it Rattata-colour), richer than ordinary sweet potatoes, boosting anthocyanin which is the same pigment that gives blueberries the colour. Anti-oxidant alert.
Take a cue from Hong Kong. While green matcha desserts were in the rage sometime back, the Japanese purple sweet potato has appeared in desserts from cakes, ice cream to waffles.
Singapore? Slowly but surely.

Purple-colour Crisp-baked Sweet Potato Bun with Custard ($3.20). If you need something beyond the standard tried-and-tested Liu Sha Bao, this is it.
This dim sum item combines some favourite elements together – crispy baked skin, purple sweet potato (which is still quite IN), and oozing custard.
Despite leaving the bun there for a while (as we were photo-taking), the filling was still smooth and flowing. A must-have.

NICEDAY Taiwanese Desserts

Opening Hours: 11am – 10:30pm
No, this is not Korean Bingsu, but a Taiwanese style “Milky Snow Mountain” dessert.
To be fair, the Purple Sweet Potato Milky Snow Mountain ($9.90) from NICEDAY did look like a bingsu, but the texture was not as fine as say, Nunsongyee’s. But at this price with this quality, I am not complaining at all.
Same good stuff, the best deal was the glass jelly at the bottom, which is supposedly worked in collaboration with one of the best in Taiwan. No wonder.
Owner Frederick came up with this purple dessert as he saw that it was very popular in Hong Kong and Taiwan, hoping that this wave would also reach Singapore.

‘Nunsaram’ means ‘snowman’ in Korean. Their shaved milk in the bingsu was soft and refined, usng machines specially imported from Korea.
One of the signatures is the Purple Sweet Potato Bingsu ($14.90) which contains both sweet potato cubes on the bingsu, and smooth sweet potato paste layered in between the shavings.

Open: 11am – 10pm Daily
Hong Kong franchise Small Potatoes Ice Creamery, specialising in Japanese purple potatoes soft serve ice cream, has opened at Novena Square 2.
The kiosk is at the basement next to Coffee Hive, and soft serve come in two basic flavours – Japanese purple potatoes from Kumamoto, and Japanese sea salt.
Toppings include caramel popcorn, crispy rice (that was not too crispy), green tea or soy bean warabi mochi, shiramata, azuki beans, purple yam sticks, and Japanese red bean Dorayaki pancake.
The good thing is the ice cream had a smooth texture, and was not overly sweet. With different textures of yam paste and the actual yam ‘colliding’ together with rich soft serve, the bite was rather enjoyable.
