Yoogane
313@Somerset B3, 313 Orchard Road Singapore 238895
Tel: +65 6634 1840
Opening Hours: 11:30am – 10pm

Yoogane has been known for its Dakgalbi stir-fried spicy chicken. This is its 3rd outlet, after Bugis Junction and Westgate.

One of my favourites is the Cheese Chicken Galbi ($55.90). This contains the signature tender chicken meat marinated in the unique Yoogane sauce marinate, fresh vegetables, rice cakes and thin slices of potato, surrounded by a layer of melted cheese.

I have the feeling that the younger customer base would take delight in this, as pieces of chicken chunks can be coated with melty, sketchy cheese for that extra oomph.

Seoul Jjimdak
City Square Mall #05-04, Singapore 208539
Tel: +65 6634 2668
Opening Hours: 11:30am – 10:00pm
Reserve Online Now – Seoul Jjimdak

Seoul Jjimdak has just opened at City Square Mall Level 5, specialising in Jjimdak, Army Stew and other Korean side dishes. The best part is, prices are affordable for its quantity and quality.

The signature Seoul Jjimdak ($33.90) is a pot of generous portions of braised succulent chicken (available with bones or boneless), potatoes, carrots, onions, dried chillis and with chewy glass potato noodles, great for sharing between 2 to 4 people.

I personally preferred the Army Stew ($33.90) between the two main ‘stars’. Seoul Jjimdak’s take is probably one of my favourites available in Singapore for its slurp-worthy homemade kimchi stew base and price. (There is a special promo price at $23.90 now for lunch, including weekends!)

Known to combined art and food, influenced by the works of Ferran Adrià and Grant Achatz, Janice Wong is one of Singapore’s most talented pastry chef, with her dessert bars found in Tokyo and Hong Kong.

This flagship Janice Wong Restaurant Bar is located at the iconic National Museum of Singapore.

Instead of focusing on just desserts, the restaurant offers a Mod-Chinese savoury menu. Both the Lunch and Dinner Degustation sets are surprisingly at a friendly price-point. The 3-course Lunch at $28, while the 5 course Dinner is priced at $68.

Many photogenic pieces here.

(Departure Hall), Singapore 819643

Located at Changi Airport Terminal 2 at the departure hall, this concept of “Peach Garden Chinese Dining“ combines the award-winning cuisine of Peach Garden Chinese Restaurant, and some of the more casual dishes of Peach Garden Noodle House, such as Hong Kong style noodles.

The dim sum offered include Steamed Siew Mai with Crystal Prawns ($5.60), Steamed BBQ Pork Bun($4.50), Steamed Creamy Custard Bun ($4.20), Xiao Long Bao ($4.80), Steamed Charcoal Sponge Cake ($4.80), Deep Fried Bean Skin Roll with Seafood ($5.80) and Pan Fried Crispy Mango with Prawn Roll ($5.80).

Roasts are the restaurant’s specialty. Other than the famous Roasted London Duck ($68.00 for whole, $35.80 for half, $18.80 for small), there is an option of having it in Peking style.

Tel: +65 6341 9668
Opening Hours: 12pm – 2:00pm, 6pm – 11:45pm (Mon – Sun)

Ah, a newly opened robataya (fireside cooking) restaurant in Singapore – for both a meal and ‘show’.

Choose from the fresh product on display, confirm selection with the service staff, and see the food grilled right in front of you.

For recommendations, do not miss the moist savoury Tsukune (chicken meatballs) with an egg on side. You can also pair your grills with sake from Yoi Sake bar. Kampai!

Tonkatsu Agedoki
Eat At Seven, Suntec City Mall (Tower One), No 3 Temasaek Boulevard #03-310/311 Singapore 038983
Opening Hours: 11:30am – 10:00pm

Tonkatsu Agedoki is sister restaurant to the long-queued Kohaku Tendon at Eat at Seven, Suntec City.

They serve thick cuts (maybe too thick) of Pork Loin or Fillet cutlets ($21.50, $26.00), using Nagano pork reared in Canada, known for their sweet-tender meat. I was quite impressed with the side dishes and sauces that went along with both the cabbage and tonkatsu.

Suspect a queue will form really soon.

Baba Chews
86 East Coast Road #01-01 Katong Square Singapore 428788
Opening Hours: All Day Dining 11:00am – 10:30pm, Dinner 6:30pm – 10:30pm, Bar Bites 11am – 11:30pm, Weekend Brunch 10:30am – 3:00pm (Sat = Sun)
Reserve Online Now – Baba Chews

Katong is already known for its heritage shophouses, many with Peranakan influence. Housed within the former Joo Chiat Police Station, Baba Chews looks set to attract hipsters with its modern meets Straits Chinese cuisine.

Other than the recommended Chilli Crab Cake with Mantou Chips ($15) and Foie Gras Tau Kwa Pau ($20), the Ayam Buah Keluak Burger ($18) looks intriguing enough.

For more Asian and local favourites, there is a variety from Penang Char Kway Teow ($15), Nonya Fried Rice, Hokkien Mee ($16), Nonya Laksa ($18) and Hainanese Chicken Rice ($17). Portions surprisingly quite satisfying.

Coo Bistro
259 Outram Road, Singapore 169056
Opening Hours: 11am – 10pm (Mon, Wed – Sat), 11am – 6pm (Sun), Closed Tues

Branded as Singapore’s first “Sociatel” in the heart of Tiong Bahru. Quite a chic-hangout place.

Coo Bistro serves up European style dishes which have local influence. Think Tiong Bahru Platter ($28), a medley of Roasted Pork Belly, Grilled Chicken Satay, Salt & Pepper Barramundi, and Mackerel Keropok with a serve of house made sambal chilli, as well as the Tiong Bahru ‘Chwee Kueh’ ($9), a dessert of Panna Cotta with Candied Walnut and Balsamic Strawberries assembled to look like the traditional ‘chwee kueh’ dish complete with ‘chai po’ (preserved turnip) and chilli.

I had a Pork Cheek Capellini ($18) which was promising, the flavours were indeed stronger and more robust which reminded me of Asian-style cooking.

Their online description says Plentyfull is your definitive place of restoration, tucked away in the thick of city jungle bustle. So sell what? Hmmmm… To keep it simple – grain bowls and salads during lunch ($17, $19), Western-Asian dishes during dinner such as Char Grilled Farmed Barramundi ($26), Glazed Mangalica Pork Jowl ($26), Thai Roasted Chicken with Garlic and Cilantro ($26) and Smoked Lamb Merguez Sausage.

For the price, portion, em, could be more well, plentyfull.

Royal London Duck
333A Orchard Road #04-21/22/23 Mandarin Gallery Singapore 238897
Tel: +65 6836 1188
Opening Hours: 11am – 10pm (Mon – Sun)

London Fat Duck USED to be good, until there are too many criticisms of late. So… their original partners have gone on separate way. And Fei Siong (yes, behind those fishcakes and BCM) have set up this restaurant at Mandarin Gallery.

Service was attentive, and the signature London Duck ($48 for whole, $25 for half, $13 for quarter) was tender. Better than the average, but didn’t have any WOW moments.
