Many have the perception that The Michelin Guide is only about fine dining restaurants and expensive meals.
That is before Asia, in particular Hong Kong, came into the picture with dim sum eatery Tim Ho Wan earning the coveted one star.
The average price of each dim sum basket is between USD$2 to USD$3, and it has become possible to have a filling Michelin meal for USD$10.
Singapore’s Hong Kong Soya Sauce Chicken Rice and Noodle at Chinatown Food Complex is the first street hawker stall to be awarded the star, resulting in 2-hour long queues and world-wide media coverage.
A plate of Chicken Rice at SGD$2 (USD$1.50) is considered very affordable even in local standards.

Price: HKD$19 (for 3 BBQ baked buns), USD$2.45 (but you are likely going to spend more ordering other items)
Tim Ho Wan 添好運 is a Cinderella story, the hole-in-the-wall dim sum restaurant that scored One Michelin Star, thereby earning its reputation as the “cheapest Michelin Star restaurant in the world” (until Singapore’s Hong Kong Soya Sauce Chicken Rice and Noodle took over the ‘honours’)
His signature Baked Bun with Barbecued Pork (HKD$19 for 3) is the star.
Very similar to a bolo bao, the sweet pastry covered bun is light and fluffy, with skin so thin, and saucy char siew pork within almost oozing out.
The portion is small, and feels like you would want to finish all three at one go. My advice: Eat them straight once the pastries are out on your table.
Other recommended dishes are the Steamed Egg Cake, Vermicelli Roll with Pig’s Liver and Pan Fried Carrot Cake.

Kam’s menu is extensive, with roasts such as Roast Suckling Pig (HK$400 for half, HK$780 for whole), Soya Chicken (HK$120 for half, HK$220 for whole), Roast Pork Ribs (HK$85) and Crispy Roast Pork (HK$80).
