10 New Cafes In Singapore December 2016 – DOTS, FRIENDS, Gudetama, Japan Rail Café. Very Exciting

I pen this down on a rainy afternoon of December 1st. This monthly cafe guide, which I have pushed for to be delivered consistently the 1st day of the month since years back, has literally become a kind of a diary for me. A reminder that the year is going past, fast.

Since then, many other websites have also started a monthly compilation. It’s great, provides all of us with more points of reference.

This IS the month of Christmas, a reminder that sometimes it would be good to gather friends to have a chat over coffee. A SLOW one. No constant checking of handphones, no Instagram-food-over-friends, no rush.

Anyway…pardon me, it’s just me getting into the December mood, while I am still imagining myself having iced latte at some faraway place.

dal.komm Coffee
The Centrepoint #01-01/06 and #01-102/103, 176 Orchard Road

Fans of Descendants Of The Sun DOTS should be familiar with this café, where “Big Boss” Song Joong Ki had coffee with Song Hye-kyo in the drama series, several times.

The good news is, the Korean cafe is going to open in Singapore at The Centrepoint this December.

Located on the first floor of The Centrepoint, the 3,000 sq ft space will be designed to exude a modern pop vibe, and is decorated with speakers, gallery frames and other unique music-themed ornaments.

Descendants of the Sun fans will be happy to take some photos with the brand’s iconic plushies from the show. Other dal.komm COFFEE merchandise such as mugs and tumblers are also available for purchase from the retail corner. Dal.Komm Coffee

Central Perk Singapore
01-01 Central Mall, 1 Magazine Road Singapore 059567
Opening Hours: 10am – 10pm (Tues – Sun), Closed Mon

A F.R.I.E.N.D.S themed café Central Perk Singapore has finally opened at Central Mall Magazine Road (Note: NOT Clarke Quay Central, though they are nearby.)

This is the only cafe outside of the United States that has been granted the intellectual property rights by Warner Brothers.

There are pieces of Rachel, Monica, Phoebe, Joey, Chandler, and Ross found all around. Some iconic features include Monica’s kitchen, Rachel’s runaway wedding dress, Phoebe’s cat (found in the guitar case), Chandler and Joey’s foosball table.

The dishes on the menu are decided after the team watched the entire show and picked out representative food items.

The mains include Janice’s Oh My God Baby Back Ribs ($39), Ahh Unagi ($36), Phoebe’s I Can’t Eat Meat Steak ($69), Chandler’s Thanksgiving Whole Roasted Chicken ($36), Joey’s Fisherman Stew ($38) and Joey’s You’re My Everest Turkey ($36). Prices look way up north though. Central Perk Singapore (Central Mall)

Gudetama Café Singapore
Suntec City Mall #01-361/362/363/364 (West Wing), 3 Temasek Boulevard Singapore 038983
Opening Hours: 9am – 10pm (Mon – Thurs), 8am – 10pm (Fri – Sun) Last Order 9:30pm

Popular Sanrio Character Gudetama finally has its own café in Singapore at Suntec City. How EGG-citing.

In terms of food, I would say better than Hong Kong’s, more promising than some of the other character cafes in Singapore, but will probably need some tweaking. Some of the savouries were slightly on the saltier side. Cakes could have been more moist.

My personal favourite are the Gude Pudding, “Are You Busy” Burger, and a tie between the Eggs Benedict and Lobster Onsen bisque soup. Gudetama Café (Suntec City)

Okay, I honestly think it’s going to be tough for them. Amiral Atelier (Paragon)

The Coconut Club
NO. 6 Ann Siang Hill, Singapore 069787 (Chinatown MRT)
Tel: +65 6635 2999
Opening Hours: 11am – 3pm (Tues – Sat)

The Coconut Club got into the foodie limelight recently with their $12.80 Nasi Lemak, served at the hipster district of Ann Siang Hill.

They specialise in serving up plates of fragrant Nasi Lemak ($12.80), coupled with traditional local sides such as charcoal-grilled Otak Otak ($8.50), Ikan Goreng (market price) and Cendol ($3.80).

Here is what’s so special about the rice: Old crop Thai Jasmine Rice is used. Coconuts are from one specific plantation in Sabak Bernam, and type is called the MAWA (The Malaysian West African strain).

This coconut milk is squeezed in-house, and has a creamier, richer texture. The Coconut Club (Ann Siang)

The Botanist
74 Neil Road Singapore 088839 (Outram Park)
Opening Hours: 8am – 6pm (Tues – Sun)

Last drink order: 5.30pm
Last food order: 5pm

Botanist is run by the same team behind Pacamara Boutique Coffee Roasters, Alchemist and Knockhouse Supply Co, so people would come with a certain expectation, especially for their coffee.

For seating areas, the garden part has a more outdoorsy, relaxing vibes, though it can be rather warm.

The Botanist offers Aussie-Melbourne inspired brunch classics of Baked Egg ($19), French Toast ($18), Maple Pancake ($18), Breakfast Platter ($23), Croque Madame ($18), Corn Fritters ($18) and Corned Beef Hash ($19).

The coffee, exclusively roasted in-house, can be described as a comforting cup – bold, low acidity, with sweet, chocolate undertones. The Botanist (Neil Road)

10 Jalan Serene, #01-03a, Serene Centre S(258748)
Tel: +656314 2247
Opening Hours: 12 noon – 10pm (Mon – Sun)

Galaxy with a difference. This comes with Taro.

Sugargaus’ Taro Galaxy ($8.80 per slice) comes with a stunning galaxy mirror glaze over layers of taro sponge and swiss meringue buttercream.

Though I found this slightly too sweet for my liking, so not exactly yum-yum for me.I expected that taro layer to be softer and more moist (even like orh nee), which would bring the overall taste a level up.

Plus point: their cakes are supposedly made traditionally from scratch without using any pre-mix.

Japan Rail Café
Tanjong Pagar Centre, Level 1
5 Wallich Street, #01-20 Tanjong Pagar Centre Singapore 078883

The East Japan Railway Company, also known as JR EAST, will be opening a Japan-bound themed café at the ground level of the new Tanjong Pagar Centre.

It is anticipated to open this coming December (4th December) and will be connected to Tanjong Pagar MRT Station.

The upcoming Japan Rail Café will provide Japanese food, kawaii Japanese items, travel information to Japan, and a convenient rail ticketing service for Japan rail passes.

That means you can purchase first a variety of train passes before you get over to Japan (and maybe not needing to queue that long there).
