House Of AnLi – Probably The Most Gorgeous Undiscovered Bistro, Right Near Orchard Road

House Of AnLi at Level 3 of Tanglin Mall is probably the most gorgeous bistro to open in Singapore of late.

I can imagine some existing diners ‘hating’ me for publicising this yet-to-be-discovered-by-hipster-café-hoppers space, but a beautiful place like this will be found out sooner or later anyway.

The bistro is an extension of the House of AnLi furniture store, and therefore the entire European design and homely setting carries on over.

The furniture items are from exclusive European labels, matched with artisanal cutlery from French label Laguiole by Jean Dubost, with Portuguese tableware, Flemish tapestries and wireless lamps. Classy and elegant.

If you sit by the window, you would be treated with a view of greenery overlooking Tanglin Road.

It is obviously a hit with expats in the vicinity, as lunchtime has gotten frequently packed. I joked with my friends that I was the only male customer at one moment in time. You get the drift.

The person behind House of AnLi is Belgian Designer Anne-Jean Liétaer (thus the name AnLi), who serves up home style European-Belgian food based on her family’s original recipes.

Mains include Maria’s Moussaka ($28 – layered eggplant with minced beef and béchamel), Ghentse Waterzooi ($26 – chicken broth with chicken fillet), Beetroot Risotto ($24), Sole Meuniere ($38 – lemon sole with butter caper sauce) and Carbonnades De Chez Nous ($28 – beef cheek with fondant potato and baby carrots).

Price wise is on the steeper side, as it was obviously attracting the relatively higher-spending-power target audience.

I had the NZ Organic Eggs served on Sourdough Toast ($9). I chose to add other items of Fresh Avocado, Mixed Mushroom and Farmer’s Bacon ($4, $6, $6). It became a $25 brunch.

Thankfully, the dish wasn’t a disappointment at all. The sour dough was delightfully chewy and well toasted, and every ingredient on that bread fresh-tasting and well-prepared. For example, the bacon was fried thinly crisp, yet not overly cooked.

After having quite many sub-par brunch sets in Singapore, this while being expensive and considered ‘simple’, brought a smile to my face. I think the ambience did add some points.

The Carbonnades De Chez Nous ($28) was a dish of beef cheek, baby carrot, fondant potato, with a Chimay Trappiste (a Belgium beer) sauce. This was a comforting, what mama-would-cook-at-home for her obedient children dish. Heartening to have tender beef with soft potatoes.

I wished there was some free toast though, to slurp up the sauce.

Take note though, if the restaurant gets packed, you may need to spend some time waiting (like 30 minutes?), and there was just a lot of talking going on (all in enclosed space). I like this place quiet.

If you want to have something light, there is Allpress coffee made on a La Marzocco coffee machine, freshly baked pastries and the signature AnLi’s Mousse Au Chocolat ($10) which was worth every spoonful. Get a friend to share that.
