No one will blame you if you cannot remember the name of this new dining and retail space at Orchard Central Level 3.
Steamroom with The Pillar and Stones.
The super friendly waiter said “SRPS” could be a better way to remember this multi-concept lifestyle space. We stuck with “Steamroom” instead. No sauna jokes please.

The space houses a kaffatea room (Steamroom), restaurant (The Pillar), retail and art lab (Stones).
“Steamroom” represents the process of kaffatea brewing; food is the key “Pillar” that brings people together; and “Stones” as a medium for the earliest form of art, reflects SRPS’ creative initiatives.
I see.

It is a beautiful space, but I wasn’t completely sure if the concept would sit well with the typical customers at Orchard Central.

The same goes with menu. The food selection created by Executive Chef Stephan Zoisl (from Chef’s Table at Tras Street) brings together seasonal produce, probably positioned as fine dining food at ‘affordable’ prices.

Selection includes Hamachi Ceviche ($14), Angus Beef Tartare ($16), Spanner Crab Salad ($15), The Norwegian Flatbread ($18), Braised Beef Cheeks ($32), Lobster Fregola Sarda Pasta ($28), Coal Smoked Red Snapper ($28) and Salmon Ochazuke ($24).
To note: They serve Nordaq still or sparkling water for $3.50, though it is free-flow.
My gut feel is the food could suit better to diners somewhere else (in the likes of Dempsey, Duxton or Tras Street) but not so much down-town Orchard Central which is frequently visited by the younger customer base.

The Lobster Fregola Sarda Pasta ($28) in rich lobster bisque with crab chunks, served with onsen egg, spring onions and parmesan shavings is probably my favourite dish.
Texture was delightful, as the not-so-commonly found sarda was used. It is a type of semolina pasta, similar to pearl couscous or you can see it as a fatter form of barley. I did wonder about the price-point though.

The other dishes were a couple of hits and misses. The Linguine Alio Olio ($19, $24 with prawn) tasted under-seasoned, ie plain.

When the 2015L Slider ($19) was presented, it probably differed from our mental image of how it would have looked.
Appearing like a burger, what you would get is one toasted pretzel bun, with pulled pork in homemade BBQ sauce sandwiched in between. When I took the first bite, it was “lovely, delicious”. On the second, an uneven spread of Dijon mustard and sauerkraut hit you like a strong bolt.

The Toss-It-Up Fries ($12) with sweet smoked paprika and slices of Jamon Iberico could potentially be a delicious snack.
Unfortunately, the fries arrived mildly cold (we took a bite before photos), and suspected that it could have been left a while in the counter before serving.

The team behind SRPS probably had a good reason for doing so, but we wondered why the retail side was placed by the window (with sun shining into the clothes) and seating area at the mall side, with some tables behind the elevators.
Well, previously Tanuki Raw and the now-closed Kilo at Pact did have some major revisions before they finally found the sweet spot to attract spoil-for-choice diners at Orchard.
