Amò is the latest Italian restaurant by Beppe De Vito and the IlLido Group – the same group behind &Sons, Aura, Braci, Osteria Art, Southbridge and ilLido at the Cliff.
There is invariably certain anticipation and expectation with its track record. We kind of know the ‘standards’ of the previous restaurants.
Upon entering Amò in 33 Hong Kong Street (near The Kitchen at Bacchanalia), I thought they have already got the décor right, starting with that Italian bar right at the doorstep.
Housed in an old 1950s warehouse with an open kitchen concept, you see exposed brick walls, vintage mosaic floor tiles retained from the original building, outdoor courtyard, with a huge hand-painted wall illustrated by local artist Venetia Stravens, it balances modern-stylish with old-school Italian charm well.
I was greeted by an Italian server, full of humour and good recommendations.
Amò’s menu focuses on classic pizzas and large sharing plates, meant to be shared with friends and family – just as the Italians do.
Its signature dish is a Spaghettoni with Boston Lobster and Tarragon ($78, serves two). Wasn’t ready for that though, as I needed more people to share that.
Other recommended dishes included the Heirloom Tomato and Radish Salad with White Balsamic ($12.00), Margherita DOP Buffalo Mozzarella, San Marzano Tomato, Basil ($26.00), Burrata with Eggplant Salad, Walnuts and Bottarga ($24.00), Hand Cut Fries with Rosemary and Mushroom Ketchup ($12.00) and Caramel Banana Tiramisú ($18.00).
There was a weekday 3-course set-lunch with coffee or tea at a more reasonably priced $28, though my friend was more enticed by the ala carte menu (as all she wanted to eat was there).
I must say I was already impressed with the Crispy Calamari with Sumac and Sundried Tomato Aioli ($22).
While the price was up-north for small-portioned starter, and it wasn’t the typical crisp-type, I loved that the squid was tender with a bite, coated in fluffy batter, and beautifully seasoned.
Will have this again.
The signature pizza of Mushroom, Truffle, Mascarpone and Tuscan Pecorino ($32) was another show-stopper.
Deliciously-thin, doughy pizza base with just some crunch on the side. The texture was lovely, truffle fragrant, and toppings flavourful. (My dining partner @hungryamanda thought that The Dempsey Cookhouse & Bar serves a mean-tasty pizza, and this is comparable.)
In contrast, the Tagliolini with Spicy Young Cuttlefish and Squid Ink ($29) was not as life-changing, tasted rather flat (would love more robustness), and the ingredients of cuttlefish did little to lift its taste up.
Ticking many of the right boxes, it won’t be long that Amò will become the next Italian hotspot for people to hang out at Hong Kong Street.
