Kurasu Singapore – Kyoto’s Japanese Specialty Shop Opens At Odeon Towers

Kurasu, which means “to live” or “lifestyle” in Japanese, started off as a Japanese homeware store in Australia.

It eventually led to a retail space in owner Yozo Otsuki’s hometown, Kyoto in 2016. It has arrived in Singapore at Odeon Towers, North Bridge Road.

Focusing on both the Japanese coffee culture and being a one-stop provider for Japanese coffee equipments, Kurasu has partnered with Good Coffee to provide a coffee subscription service where subscribers get beans roasted by artisan Japanese roasters on a monthly basis.

Housed within Level 2 of Odeon Towers in district6, a co-working space and offices, I got to see a fair bit of ongoing serious business talk over a cup of coffee.

Many executives seem to need that extra caffeine boost after a heavy lunch.

The space is simple and minimalist, with a coffee table to witness the hand pour process, and several sofa seats for a cozy and homely feel.

The menu is entirely coffee (with no food options) as Kurasu seeks to stay true to its passion for coffee. Offerings include Black/ Iced Black ($5), Latte/ Cappuccino/ Flat White ($5), Iced White ($6), Pourover (from $6) and Matcha Latte ($5).

Using a blend of Ethiopia, Brazil and Columbia roasted by Single O in Tokyo for their milk-based espresso, the Flat White ($5) was smooth, heavy-bodied with a nutty tone.

My cup of coffee (literally), was strong and well-balanced, yet not overpowering.

The Matcha Latte ($5) available in both hot and iced, was made using Morihan matcha powder from Kyoto. Morihan is one of well known, long established green tea shops over there.

It was smooth and slightly milky, with distinct matcha notes.

Kurasu aims to be a place where people drink, buy and talk about coffee, and I believe that this hidden gem (given its non- conspicuous location at level 2 of Odeon Tower) given more publicity will shine in the future.
