Chinese Noodle Bar by Blue Lotus – Truffle La Mian And Chilli Crab Xiao Long Bao At Science Park

While I have never had the opportunity to venture Blue Lotus at Quayside Isle Sentosa Cove, I have heard some positive reviews about its modern Chinese cuisine. Especially for its Chilli Pomelo Crab and roasted meats.

Plus I am a fan of The Adventures of Tintin. The restaurant is named after one of the series.

Therefore, I was quite keen to try out the Chinese Noodle Bar by Blue Lotus, which offers northern Chinese-style Dumplings and La Mian at Science Park Ascent.

Not the most convenient place to get to, but at least it is a walking distance from Kent Ridge MRT station.

The restaurant is also part of a dining enclave called Savourworld, which contains many food places such as Ramen Atelier, Garçons, Aglio Olio, Licktionary, Ottoman Kebab & Grill, Kick Café, and Modus.

I am however, curious that the entire concept seems slightly off the radar? Perhaps they are still waiting for the correct moment to start some form of marketing.

Chinese Noodle Bar by Blue Lotus focuses on Northern Chinese flavours and dishes, and signature dishes include the Grilled Giant King Prawn “Lau Gan Ma” Noodles ($16.00), the Signature Crispy Pork Lard Truffle La Mian ($12.00), a vegetarian Truffle Mushroom & Beansprout La Mian ($12.00), Grilled Soya Chicken Drumstick Noodles ($13.00) and Braised Minced Pork Lu Rou Fan ($12.00).

Starters such as the Tea Smoked Egg ($1.50) using a blend of premium tieguanying tea and five spices, and Chilled Drunken Chicken Drumstick ($9.00) made with Shao Hsing Hua Tiao Chinese Wine are also featured on the menu.

I was most intrigued by the Chilli Pomelo Crab Meat & Minced Pork Xiao Long Bao ($9.00) since it was based on the best-selling dish in the other outlet.

However, what worked for one dish might not for another.

The chilli crab sauce kind of overpowered the natural sweetness of the pork and broth within the dumpling, such that you would taste mainly just the spiciness from the sauce.

I also ordered the Truffle Mushroom & Beansprout La Mian ($12.00), hoping it could bring some excitement as truffle (or at least the oil) is seldom used in casual Chinese restaurants.

Perhaps I should have held my expectations back a little.

While the noodles in terms of bite was decent, the entire combination lacked some form of oomph and I felt the need to add some other sauces in – which I don’t normally do.

The Grilled Soya Chicken Drumstick Noodles perhaps also exposed some of its weakness. While noodles could have been a forte, soya chicken wasn’t.

The sauce somehow didn’t penetrate into the meat, and the drumstick ended up being quite dry.

Maybe I should put a qualifier that food wasn’t bad, I was just expecting more because I heard so many good things about Blue Lotus.

Perhaps this noodle bar is also branded as a more affordable, casual dining place with focus on the spirits, plus it is catered for busy office workers who come and go.
