Warning: reading this may make you very hungry. As Singapore’s National Day is approaching, I thought I should do a fun piece and compile some Salted Egg “National Dishes” in Singapore.
Sure enough, the spicy Chilli Crab, Chicken Rice, Prata and Fried Kway Teow are our local favourites. But some of the salted egg dishes are fast catching up in popularity.
Now imagine these popular Singapore iconic food items having a salted egg twist. I am talking about Salted Egg Kway Teow, Salted Egg Carrot Cake, Salted Egg Curry Puff, Salted Egg Chicken Rice!

What I did was I went on the newly launched “Salted Egg Shiok” map to check out the tempting salted egg dishes on our sunny island and their locations. A map that tells you where you can find salted egg food nearest your home or office. Serious.
Mellben Signature
7 Tanjong Pagar Plaza #01-105 Singapore 081007
Salted Egg Crab
Mellben has always been attracting crowds for their crabs, but this is the first time I had their Salted Egg Yolk Crabs (seasonal pricing).
I was expecting a wetter sauce, but the mighty crustacean came in a drier form such that the fleshly crabs had already absorbed some of the flavours.
The outer coating was grainy with a moderate touch of sweetness, added with fragrance from the curry leaves and butter. You will find yourself licking your fingers pretty soon.
Tip: You can request for extra sauce at $4 to go with the crispy mantou.
Mellben Signature

Salted Egg Prawns
One of those occasions when I preferred the prawns over the crabs. Somehow the drier sauce worked well with the fresh sea prawns, good enough that you can actually have them with the shells on.
Penang Culture
JEM, 50 Jurong Gateway Road #04-27, Singapore 608549
Premium Crab Meat & Salted Egg Fried Kway Teow
This dish ($15.95) is inspired by the Penang Fried Kway Teow, with flat rice noodles wok-fried with garlic, taugeh (beansprouts), and homemade sambal chilli paste before mashed salted egg is incorporated to coat every strand.
There are also other ingredients of prawns, squid, fish cake and cockles. The crucial touch is the toppings of meaty mud crab meat and salted egg crumbs.
Hong Kong Street Family Restaurant
273 Thomson Rd, #01-01 Novena Garden Singapore 307644
Salted Egg Pork Ribs
This zhi char restaurant frequented by families has been popular for its San Lou Horfun and Har Cheong Gai. However, I would also recommend its Salted Egg Pork Ribs ($14, $20) now that I discovered it.
The dish came almost without bones. Goody! (Almost because one piece had.) The salted egg sauce sauce used was milkier-looking and not too grainy, giving every tender pork slice an even coat of creaminess.
Ah Dong Teh House
10 Tebing Lane, #01-03/04 Singapore 828849
Salted Egg Carrot Cake
I ventured all the way to this Hong Kong inspired ‘cha caan teng’ at Punggol East Water Promenade Riverside Walk. Far, but you get beautiful surroundings close to nature.
Halal-certified Ah Dong Teh House serves up this Salted Egg Carrot Cake ($8.90) with a difference, deep-fried with chicken luncheon meat, tossed with salted egg sauce then topped with chicken floss.
I liked how there as a mixture of texture with crispy cubes alternating with the soft carrot cake. Available for a limited period.
Big Street Singapore
104-106 Jalan Besar, Singapore 208828
Salted Egg Prata Bomb
This wasn’t quite what I was expecting. This Liu Sha Prata ($6) did look like a ‘bomb’, or a thick, fat piece on a black stone plate.
As I cut it open ‘forcefully’, the salted egg lava just flowed, flowed and flowed. So gentle reminder to do this gently in future.
The fillings were more towards the sweet side, with a touch of savouriness. Not bad. If the prata was actually crispier, this would have been perfect.
Sinar Malay Seafood
Various branches, including 456 Jurong west Street 41 #01-750 Singapore 640456
Salted Egg San Lou
Sinar Malay Seafood serves up A LOT of salted egg yolk dishes, but the Salted Egg San Lou will likely to become one of its most popular.
What you get is a portion of wok-fried thin rice noodles, with a slab of crisp chicken cutlet drenched in thick salted egg gravy. Sedap!
ChatterBox
333 Orchard Rd, Level 5, Mandarin Orchard, Singapore 238867
Salted Egg Chicken Wings
Award-winning Chatterbox is known throughout for its popular Hainanese style Mandarin Chicken Rice. Few may know that the menu also features Salted Egg Chicken Wing ($20 ++).
The Salted Egg Chicken Wings were marinated in curry spices to enhance the flavours. After which, the wings were then coated with salted egg yolk and fried with curry leaf and chilli padi. I wished there were more wings on that plate!

Salted Egg Fish Skin
This is seriously, dangerously addictive. The Salted Egg Fish Skin ($18 ++) was savoury crisp, wrapped with aromatic salted egg.
Ya Fu Kitchen
Various branches, including Food Republic @ Manulife Centre, 51 Bras Basah Road, #01-03 Singapore 189554
Salted Egg Chicken Rice
Open your eyes wider in the foodcourt, and you may find some surprises.
Ya Fu Kitchen at Food Republic serves up few versions of their signature Salted Egg Rice dishes, including Salted Egg Prawn, Salted Egg Pork Ribs, and Salted Egg Chicken (all $7).
The karaage-like chicken pieces were first deep-fried, then further wok-fried with salted egg sauce before serving on top of rice, with fried egg. As the sauce was rather wet, it made for a warm, comforting meal.
Tip: Add some chopped chilli padi to add some kick.
Char-Grill Bar
Various branches, including 46 Owen Rd, Singapore 210046
Salted Egg Crispy Chicken Chop
Home-grown coffee-shop chain stall Char-grill bar is known for its affordable local Western food, and its mega Crispy Chicken Chop has a new addition – Salted Egg Sauce. Also look out for the Chicken Burger Box, drizzled with salted egg sauce in the middle.
Tip Top
Various branches, including 1 Raffles Place #B1-26 Singapore 048616
Salted Egg Curry Puff
Tip Top’s Curry Puff ($1.70) now comes with premium potatoes, chicken pieces, egg, specially handpicked blend of spices and salted egg yolk! Okay, to be honest, I wished that the salted egg flavour could be more pronounced, perhaps covered up by the spices.
