When we talk about Korean Bingsu in Singapore, the frontrunner should be Nunsongyee who went from a small outlet two years ago, to branches in Bugis, Tanjong Katong, Century Square, Upper Thomson and Bukit Timah now.

Few know that the Korean dessert café has just opened an outlet at Hougang Midtown. For a dessert after dinner, the branch opens till 11:00pm everyday except Tuesday.

Hougang Midtown?

That is a residences-mall development located at Upper Serangoon Road, a short walk away from Hougang MRT Station and Hougang Mall. (There is not much publicity done on Midtown, but there are many food choices there that go under-the-radar. So good to check it out if you are in the vicinity.)

Nunsongyee 눈송이 , pronounced as noon-song-yi which means “snowflake” in serves up a range of Daebak Korean desserts from bingsu and signature toasts and Korean rice cakes in a comfortable café environment.

The Hougang branch has a level two dining area, a ceiling to floor window view which overlooks a grass-field – suitable to spend a lazy afternoon here (since the café also comes with free wifi).

Other than the Thai Milk Tea Bingsu, the other dessert varieties here include Black Sesame, Coffee, Snow White, Mango, Cheesecake, Choco-Banana and Mixed Berries Bingsu. Here are some of my favourites:

Thai Milk Tea Bingsu
Combining two of my hot Korean and Thai items, the Thai Milk Tea Bingsu is developed exclusively for the Hougang store.

The dessert contained Thai Tea ice cream topped on cheese cake, with peanuts layered over shaved milk.

A small cup of specially-concocted Thai Tea milk is given for you to pour over should you find it not sweet enough (I actually poured two cups in. 55555)

This almost felt like I was having my favourite drink, except this came in a dessert form, especially when the snow flakes just melted a little. I like the crunch coming from the crushed peanuts, and digestives buried beneath.

Can just become my favourite Nunsongyee Bingsu flavour.

Injeolmi Bingsu
Injeolmi is a type of tteok or Korean rice cake, made by steaming and pounding glutinous rice flour, shaped into small pieces, then covered with steamed powdered dried beans or other ingredients.

Nunsongyee prides itself in its tteok as the founder’s grandparents were rice farmers, and the Korean rice cakes were created by the family’s recipes passed down generations.

I found that the rice cakes on the bingsu had a pleasing, chewy texture that doesn’t stick to the teeth. (Hate those dry and artificial tasting ones).

Pat Bingsu
Pat means “red bean paste” in Korean, and this version comes with a big scoop of sweet red bean in the middle, with cubes of rice cake on the top.

Suitable for those who would prefer the more traditional tasting bingsu.

Green Tea Bingsu
Korean green tea flavours are typically on more subtle, less bitter side, compared to say Japanese matcha.

Interesting to note that Nunsongyee’s bingsu are made of milk, thus they do not use the term ‘shaved ice’, and you would find the shavings softer and more snow-like than usual.

Strawberry Bingsu
I liked how pieces of cut strawberries were lined from the circumstance to the inner.

This would have taken more effort from the kitchen staff, and as customers, we are getting more value-for-the-money with more fruits.

Other than bingsu, leave space for the Signature Toasts, with offerings of Injeolmi Toast, Cinnamon Injeolmi Toast, Chocolate Injeolmi Toas, Garlic Cheese Injeolmi Toast, and Honey Toast with a scoop of ice cream.

The toasts are prepared to a golden-brown, contrasted with sticky-soft injeolmi in the middle. Liked that the toast were already cut into 8 equal pieces – save the further hassle.

If you are coming here with a loved one, there is one additional reason to order the toast.

The stickiness of these rice cakes symbolises true love and a desire for couples and families to “stick together” for life in Korea. Ah-huh, now you know.
