Song Kee Fishball Noodles – Toa Payoh’s Song Kee Opens At Thomson Plaza With Handmade Fish Dumplings

A Song Kee Fishball Noodles has opened at Thomson Plaza, near the foodcourt side.

Wait, but this isn’t the same Song Kee at Tembeling Road, but a franchise of Song Kee Kway Teow Soup, Toa Payoh Lorong 5.

I used to visit the Toa Payoh outlet quite often in the past, as I used to host the night radio shifts on UFM1003. That was one of the few worthy stalls opened till late, the other favourite stall being the fried chicken wings.

The mee pok, drenched in a sumptuous sauce of chilli, vinegar and pork-lard oil was consistently comforting.

Song Kee Fishball Noodles at Thomson Plaza is a casual, no-fuss eatery which serves up its Fishball Noodles ($5.50, $6.50) with different noodle choices of mee pok, mee kia, kway teow, bee hoon and mee tai mak.

Auntie at the cashier said they were operating on a franchise model, because she was a big fan of the noodles herself. Always happy that humble hawker stalls are able to expand in one way or another to carry on the ‘legacy’.

Upon the first few bites, I thought while this would still make a better-than-average bowl of local noodles, the X-factor seemed to be missing.

Somehow, the combination of sauces weren’t as enticing, and the noodles especially the mee kia weren’t as springy as the original outlet.

Overall, I enjoyed the meatballs which were bouncy and moist on the inside.

However, the hand-made Fish Dumplings her keow made from actual fish paste was unexpectedly disappointing – had too thick a skin, too mushy a filling.

The friend who accompanied me for this meal for Song Kee Toa Payoh the next day. He texted me, ”Somehow Thomson Plaza better”.

Maybe consistency is really the issue.
