Jjigae Jjigae – Korean Stews With Collagen Stock At Raffles Place. Come With Individual Pots Too

A Korean hot pot stew eatery with offerings of individual pots sounds like a good idea.

After all, having Korean Jjigae such as the Army Stew in a traditional restaurant requires you to jio a number of people to split the cost and calories.

I come across this CBD eatery Raffles Xchange after a gym session, and its name “Jjigae Jjigae” which means Korean stews intrigued me enough.

The eatery offer stews for the individuals, so do not come across as intimidating even if you are the type who likes to dine alone away from your colleagues.

Jjigae Jjigae is actually opened by local restaurant chain The Soup Spoon (ah I see), serving up a variety of hearty Korean hot pot stews at wallet-friendly prices.

There are four basic choices – pork, beef, beef & pork and seafood, priced a $12.90 to $16.90 for one pax, and $19.90 to $28.90 for 2 pax.

The soup base is said to feature house-made “beauty” collagen stock simmered over 16 hours, with options of yuzu salt, doenjang (fermented bean paste) or the spicy kimchi gochujang.

I had the Kimchi Gochujang Beef & Pork ($13.90) which reminded me of a mini-Army Stew.

Portion was considered sizable, with generous ingredients of sliced beef and pork, cheddar cheese, cheese cocktail sausages, cheese tofu, napa cabbage, enoki mushrooms, rice cakes, sweet potato starch noodles amongst others.

I found the soup quite tasty, and appreciated the thickness possibly created by the baked beans.

While those served in most Korean restaurants were usually spicier with that distinct pickled kimchi taste, this was more subdued but no less appetising.

A comforting lunch treat.

You can also add on rice balls available in mini ($5.00 – $5.50) and regular ($9.80 – $10.80) portions.

A bowl of rice with ingredients such as crunch vegetables and seaweed would be served, and you could choose to roll them up with the gloves provided. Reminded me of what Masizzim also had.

I did wonder about two areas though. The space was considered enclosed, and with many pots going off at the same time, the area was rather hot and I must have sweated quite a bit.

Fortunately, the eatery installed more fans than usual. Think they are aware of this situation.

CBD folks might have preferred something fast and convenient, and how many would have the luxury of time to sit through a hotpot meat during peak lunch hour.

I do find the concept of Jjigae Jjigae in Singapore’s context, and might work better in more youth-targeted venues.
