What?! Only $5.90 for a Japanese Kakigori かき氷 (shaved ice)?
Taking over the space previously occupied by New Urban Male (next to SaladStop and Starbucks Coffee) at The Cathay Handy Road (I don’t mean Cathay Cineleisure), Kori King is a new takeaway kiosk specialising in Japanese Kakigori.
Not to be confused with Korean Bingsu, Kakigōri is a Japanese shaved ice dessert typically flavoured with syrup and a sweetener such as condensed milk.
I wondered what took Singapore so long to have a dedicated-Kakigori shop, since cafes such as SHARI SHARI Kakigori House 氷屋 is very popular in Hong Kong.

Kori King’s signature item is the Kakigori ($5.90) that comes with 4 mochi balls.
Cues all the students nearby from SMU, SOTA, Kaplan, Lasalle, and NAFA who will appreciate this wallet-friendly price.
This is compared to the other Kakigori available nearby, which could be priced at more than $18.00, almost triple the price. But we do need to recognise that the machinery and ingredients used could be very much different.

The Kakigori ($5.90) is available in 8 different flavours such as Strawberry, Mango, Tiramisu, Black Sesame, Gula Melaka, Sour Plum, Matcha and Peanut Butter, with additional toppings such as Tapioca Pearls, Moshi Balls and Fruits (Strawberry, Banana, Kiwi) at $1 more.
The sauces are said to be made using 100% natural flavours and seasonal fruits with no colourings and preservatives.

Each kakigori is served in a takeaway cone, mainly to eat on-the-go as seats are (really) limited.
However, no queue number or buzzer was given upon order, which made the ordering system slightly messy.

Digging into the pile of shaved ice, the dessert was surprisingly soft and fluffy, like a cloud (not that I tasted clouds before, just figuratively saying.)
However, consumption could get a little messy as the shaved ice toppled easily due to its light weight and fluffiness.

My favourite was the Peanut Butter Kakigori ($5.90), drizzled with peanut butter sauce and Hokkaido Milk.
Distinct and not overpowering, the kakigori was not too heavy and suitable as a light snack.

The Matcha Kakigori ($5.90) could do with a little more matcha sauce, to bring out more flavours as eating got a little boring halfway through.
The extra toppings (additional $1) that I ordered were hidden within the shaved ice, so it won’t topple along the way.

Other items available include Dorayaki ($2.90). You know, Doraemon’s favourite pancakes, that comes in 5 differs flavours: Dark Choco, Matcha, Lemon Custard, Praline and Peanut Butter.
What? No classic Red Bean Pancakes? Doraemon would have been sad.
For the price point and quality of shaved ice, this was pretty worth it.
So time to jio you Kaki (aka friends) for some Kori, I mean Kakigori.
