Mooncakes in Singapore are getting more ‘high level’, with creative and appetising choices for us consumers.

Fancy some very-interesting mooncakes such as Tom Yum, Sakura Ebi or Chicken Ba Kwa Wu Ren Mooncakes?

Home-grown brand Bakerzin known for their pastries and European-style bread, has developed and launched a “Crème de la Crème 2017 Mooncake Collection” which offers both premium traditional classics and modern delights.

This features a range of 8 delectable collection of exquisite mooncakes. Here is what you can expect:

1. Bold Collection (limited to 500 boxes only) – $66 (4 pcs)

Limited to just 500 boxes only, the Bold Collection includes one of each of the following flavour: Ginger, Tom Yum, American Ginseng, and Sakura Ebi – all of which are uncommonly seen for mooncakes.

Some of you may be wondering… will this work?

The Tom Yum Mooncake which symbolises ubiquity was surprisingly one of my favourites, only mildly sour and spicy. It may remind you to a certain extent of the hearty Thai dish, with that kick towards the back.

Yet, the balance between sweet, spicy and sour is quite on-point, such that you should not feel it is overly bizarre.

The Sakura Ebi Mooncake contains bits of sakura shrimps, which include some texture and that touch of savouriness in a sweet mooncake. I must say, this is surprisingly addictive as well.

Both the American Ginseng and Ginger Mooncakes are similar to oriental tonic drinks, with multiple health benefits.

4 exciting tastes in one box, for the bold and adventurous. Remember, 500 boxes only!

2. Supreme Collection – $60 (4 pcs)

The Supreme Collection consists of a mixture and sweet and savoury traditional baked mooncakes: one Chicken Bak Kwa Wu Ren Mooncake, one Tangerine Wu Ren Mooncake and two pieces of Classic Melon Seed Mooncakes.

The Chicken Bak Kwa Wu Ren Mooncake is my recommendation in this collection.

The Mooncake with salty-sweet dried meat (like “jerky”) with a hint of citrusy taste reminded me of… Chinese New Year. Ah, the taste of festivity.

The Tangerine Wu Ren and Classic Melon Seed Mooncakes are packed with Wu Ren nuts and melon seeds respectively for an enhanced crunch, adding that layered texture to the usual classics.

For those who prefer the more traditional taste of mooncakes.

3. Signature Collection – $62 (4 pcs)

One can never go wrong with classics, and this is back by popular demand this year. This features a total of 4 Premium Egg Yolk Blend Mooncakes.

When I cut it open, I realised that each mooncake is packed with a thick layer of fragrant salted egg yolk paste in the core, and not individual egg yolks.

WOW. The benefit is that the salted egg would be distributed more proportionally, and there won’t be such a mess of unevenly cut egg.

Also, the yolk blend was smooth and merged well with the lotus seed paste.

Satisfying for salted egg lovers, who will be thrilled with the generous amount in each mooncake. You will get that salted egg whether you cut the cake in halves, quarters, or eighths.

4. Premium Collection – $60 (4 pcs)

The difference between the Signature and Premium Collection is that the latter contains two Premium Egg Yolk Blend Mooncakes and two Classic Melon Seed Mooncakes.

For the best of both worlds, the Premium Collection features a balance of soft Premium Egg Yolk Blend Mooncakes and crunchy Melon Seed Mooncakes in a box.

5. Pure Divine Collection – $56 (8 pcs)

There is always space for Snow Skin Mooncakes. This year, Bakerzin has introduced the Pure Divine Collection which is purely made up of fruits.

Each box contains a colourful array of Cempedak (aka jackfruit), Yuzu, Taiwan Green Mango with Mango Crunch and Honeydew with Apricot Crunch Mooncakes in pink, yellow, orange and green colours.

I enjoyed the Cempedak with bits of jackfruit visible in the paste, wrapped within thin and soft snow skin. Pure bliss with pure 100% Cempedak in every bite!

The Yuzu should be a hit with its tinge of sweetish-citrusy bitterness, almost like having a Japanese Yuzu dessert.

Small and packs a punch, this ‘fruit collection’ is suitable for the family and even young children.

6. Majestic Collection – $70 (8 pcs) (Currently unavailable as sold out as first batches were sold out. Check www.bakerzin.com/mooncake for updated availability)

No fruit is more “majestic” that the King of Fruits, I guess.

Beneath the soft snow skin would be thick premium grade durian flesh, and you get a mix of sweetness with subtle bitter taste, complete with buttery-smooth mouthful.

If you know of a Durian fan, then this is the box to get.

7. Heavenly Collection – $56 (8 pcs)

The collection is the one I am more in-tuned with, and should be popular with the ‘hipsters’ and young families.

The Heavenly Collection contains a total of 4 black sesame based flavours, in monochromatic colours of white, white with black sesame spots (which we nick-named as “The Dalmatian”), grey and black.

The Black Sesame Snow Skin is straight-forward with subtle roasted goma savour, while Black Sesame and Butterscotch Snow Skin has an added layer of lightly sweetened butterscotch paste, giving it a caramelized and custardy finish.

The Black Sesame and Peanut Butter Snow Skin combination provides an intriguing taste sensation of fragrant roasted black sesame casing silky paste complemented with crunchy peanut in the middle.

The Black Sesame and Coconut Egg Custard Snow Skin is that creamy, dreamy mooncake that coconut lovers can go nuts for.

For those who wants to go for something out-for-the-ordinary, yet safe, the Pure Black Sesame Snow Skin Mooncake is the one.

8. Prestige Collection – $60 (8 pcs)

Fans of Bakerzin will be familiar with the Prestige Collection, featuring the popular alcohol infused white chocolate truffle ganache found in the centre of the mooncake.

A total of 8 pieces, 2 of each flavours are included: Apple Vodka, Butterscotch Baileys, Coconut Liqueur and Latte Kahlua Snow Skin.

For something lighter and fruity, the green Apple Vodka Snow Skin and beige-coloured Coconut Liqueur Snow Skin should make refreshing choices.

The orange Butterscotch Baileys Snow Skin features a stronger alcoholic taste and creamy finish; while brown Latte Kahlua Snow Skin is a seamless blend of latte fillings and coffee-flavored liqueur.

These collections should also be approved by PM LEE (who encouraged us to go low-sugar, as all the Bakerzin Mooncakes are made using premium low sugar lotus paste – less sweet and healthier.

My personal 3 favourite flavours are the Tom Yum and Sakura Ebi Mooncakes from the Bold Collection and Black Sesame & Peanut Butter Snow Skin Mooncakes from the Heavenly Collection, as they are both unique and delectable.

All mooncakes are packed in an attractive floral metallic tin, which symbolises the beauty and elegance of autumn. Great for gifts.
