[Seoul] Other than Common Ground, Under Stand Avenue 언더스탠드에비뉴 is the other trendy shipping container space to look out for.
It is located opposite Seoul Forest at Seongdong-gu, comprising of 116 repurposed colourful containers.
Like other similar concept spaces, you can go expecting stalls offering food, knick-knacks, exhibitions and some live shows.
It took me about a 30 minutes cab ride to reach from Myeongdong (was 10,000 won in fare, plus minus) but it could be easily reached from Seoul Forest Station.
You can follow your tracks of many youths and families who would make their way there.
After a quick walk through, I realised that Under Stand Avenue was not like the other container spaces I have been to. Instead of the typical instagrammable food, the offerings were not quite the usual suspects.
I navigated past stalls of fresh produce and fruits such as tangerines, arts and handicrafts, and food that actually looked healthy.
While most stalls elsewhere were generally run by young people, I could help but notice many local farmers and ajooma (aunties) behind preparing and cooking.
Other than some street food of cheese toasts, crepes and grilled cheese sticks, you could find gimbap, japchae, grilled mushrooms, juices and home-brewed bottled wines.
Under Stand Avenue actually has a special value.
It is a “creative public-interest platform” aimed to help the young generation, migrant women, artists and social entrepreneurs.
The different clusters include “Youth Stand” to support the young for job training; “Art Stand” that creates space for artistic experiences; “Power Stand” to provide co-working space for youth entrepreneurs; and “Mom Stand” with training and job opportunities for women – therefore you will find some stalls selling home-cooked food.
As Under Stand Avenue is not that big a space, you could dedicate about an hour or so if you are travelling here.
After which, you can take a stroll at Seoul Forest, or explore other hipster cafes at Seongdong-gu.
