The Local Box at Tanjong Pagar started out as a local foodie’s dream, serving familiar local favourites in a takeaway box.
I also noticed that the food tasted healthier, and included more vegetables than the average stall.
Meals at The Local Box are created to be rooted in Singapore’s local flavours, and additional vegetables is currently provided free of charge to promote a more well balanced eating lifestyle.
HPB peeps, are you reading this?
I have learnt that owner Samantha left her corporate job in a media agency to open this causal eatery.
As someone who previously worked around the CBD, she felt the ‘tapau’ (takeaway) culture in Singapore was very strong, but there were limited food options around especially when it rained.
Therefore, they have implemented direct delivery for personal or corporate orders for that added convenience. Pre-orders are also available online for those who pre-plan their meals.
As for the food, dishes or should I say boxes, offered include Nasi Lemak with Satay Chicken ($5.90) which comes with a sunny side up, papadum, ikan bilis and a side of greens, Salted Egg Chicken with Rice ($5.50), and weekly special of rotating dishes such as Dry laksa ($5.90) and Beef Rendang with Rice.
Few may know that The Local Box also serves up Bubble Tea, with interesting flavours of Iced Nutella, Iced Pineapple Thyme, Iced Blue Coral and Iced Earl Grey ($2.50 – $3.00, $0.50 additional for pearls).
Local coffee and tea ($1.40 – $1.80) are also available.
I had the Salted Egg Chicken with Rice ($5.50), also served in a brown box even though I was dining in.
The combination didn’t feel as greasy or salty as I would have imagined, and I also enjoyed the added broccoli and carrots hidden below the egg.
However, as perhaps I arrived at the tail-end of lunch to avoid the crowd, food served overall was mildly on the cold side, even the fried chicken pieces.
I returned during the breakfast phase for some Char Bee Hoon and Iced Kopi.
Their version could be different from what you have outside. It was much less oily, plainer tasting, and had a homely touch. Though I felt the need to add some of the sambal chilli.
Possibly a first time F&B owner, there were some operational processes that could have been fine tuned for better efficiency and customer experience. For example, the placement of utensils and bin.
My little suggestion is that The Local Box should think about more dishes that could differentiate itself from the rest, other than Nasi Lemak. Tanjong Pagar Food Centre with many tasty and inexpensive Nasi Lemak stalls, is just a short walk away.
