It is heartening to see the Singapore society getting more inclusive, and I make it a point to help cover some of these hidden gems that go beyond to help others.
There include: Five &2 which employs the marginalised and donates food to resource-poor families; New Rasa Singapura which employs staff with physical or mental impairment; Lina’s Café that promotes autism awareness; and Pope Jai Thai which hires staff with special needs. To name a few.
Seeds is another undiscovered café that is full of heart.
Its location may provide some indication of its mission, as it is found within Rainbow Centre at Margaret Drive School.
Therefore, Seeds is a vocational training ground for persons with disabilities so that they can transit to open employment, and a platform to advocate for a more inclusive community.
I like the name of the place. You help plant a seed, which can grow to a tall and strong tree, or even a harvest.
The café is born out of community collaborations, with partners such as Tiong Hoe Specialty Coffee (Coffee Training), LAANK (Interior Design), Phunk Studio and Black Design (Branding).
The moment I walked in, I already liked the vibes of the entire place.
The design might seem simple, but there were finer details, such as the clean lines, cosy furniture and artefacts that make up a consistent look that many might term “instagrammable”. (LAANK is also behind the design of National Kitchen, Cake Spade and The Marmalade Pantry. Maybe that’s wht I happen to like all of them.)
Also displayed are students’ art works which customers can purchase, and contributions will aid vocational training for the school.
As this is the soft launch phase, the menu is limited to coffee and pastries such as muffins and brownies. The coffee uses the Gachala blend roasted by Tiong Hoe Specialty Coffee.
Seeds Café will be officially launched next year. Kudos to the team and partners who work together for greater good.
