Am I the only one who thinks the name of this café is a tongue twister?
Carrara Café is located at Blk 2 Jalan Bukit Merah, of walking distance from ABC Brickworks Food Centre, few shops away from fellow ice-cream café Geometry.
Note that the map and address on its Facebook would direct you to Singapore General Hospital – don’t go there.
The word “Carrara” refers to high quality marble. ”But none of these ‘marble’ tables here are actually made of marble?” My friend quipped, knocking on the light-weighted faux marble table tops.
There are 3 components to Carrara – a café, bistro and creamery.
The ice cream display is on the outside, enticing people who would walk past, especially the school children. However, that would mean people already seated inside the café have to get out through the door to pick your flavours.
They include Fresh Coconut, Earl Grey Lavender, Vanilla, Mango, Thai Tea, Cookies & Cream, Strawberry, Salted Caramel and After Eight.
You can have a scoop on the Signature Waffle ($8.50) topped with chocolate sauce with a side of maple syrup.
While its presentation didn’t look overly impressive, this waffle actually scored taste wise. The outer layer was suitably crispy, matched with thick fluffy batter. The accompany scoops of Thai Tea and Coconut ice cream which I ordered were creamy, with pronounced flavours of each.
Mains served were familiar items you get from the typical Singapore-café, with Chilli Crab Pasta ($14.90), Tom Yum Seafood Pasta ($13.90), Truffle Breakfast Pasta ($13.90), Chicken Chop Aglio Olio ($12.90), Fried Chicken and Waffle ($12.90), Salted Egg Fried Chicken and Waffle ($13.90) and Fish & Chips ($12.90).
I did spot an interesting sounding Marmite Fried Chicken & Waffle ($13.90).
The friendly cashier recommended me the Mentaiko Prawn Pasta ($14.90). It was… okay, as how I expected it would taste like… pasta tossed with mentaiko cream sauce, with the addition of three small sautéed prawns.
Perhaps using a portion of spicier mentaiko could make the dish less predictable and boring to eat through?
