Tian Jin Flaky Scallion Pancake 天津蔥抓餅 – Popular Crispy Pancakes At Yong Kang Street, Taipei

[Taipei] A flaky Scallion (spring onion) Pancake is a delicious snack that can be found in Taiwan, prepared empty or filled with a variety of toppings like spicy sauce, cheese, ham, and eggs.

Some of my Singaporean friends call this the “Roti Prata”. Well, yes and no.

While dozens of stands in Taipei sell this mouth-watering snack, Tian Jin Flaky Scallion Pancake 天津蔥抓餅 is the one of the most popular found at Yong Kang Street.

Their stand is located in the Da’an District next to a Pho Place, diagonally opposite
Smoothie House 思慕昔, of short walking distance from Yong Kang Beef Noodles 永康牛肉麺館.

The line in front of Tian Jin Flaky Scallion Pancake is usually long, but it moves rather quickly because the staff members (the ‘aunties’) preparing are experienced.

I was perhaps the 20th in line, and it took about 15 minutes to get my pancakes.

As this shop serves pancakes to go. All you need to do is stand in line for a bit, place an order, and wait for this delicious snack.

There are several variations of the pancake here at Tian Jin Flaky Scallion Pancake, but the original version is the most popular and costs NT$25 (SGD$1.10).

You can also order the second most popular version that is practically the same except they coat one side of the pancake with an egg at NT$30 (SGD$1.35).

There are also flaky scallion pancakes with ham, cheese, and corn (NT$40, SGD$1.80). The full pancake (NT$50, SGD$2.25) comes with all three of the mentioned ingredients.

In case you never tried a flaky scallion (spring onion) pancake, it can be best described as a savoury and flaky flatbread with scallions mixed together with the dough.

Unlike other places where these pancakes are often greasy, this shop offers light and flaky ones.

The Tian Jin Pancakes were delicious – I won’t mind having another, but though not mind-blowing tasty (I would dedicate 5 minutes maximum to queue for this again). They are also slightly thicker, but no less fluffy than other stalls.

It may sound simple to make, but it is important to reach the perfect amount of flakiness. I would recommend eating them while they are hot, but NOT immediately as it can be scalding.

Right before serving, the ‘auntie’ would hit the pancake on the sides a couple of times, with a “clang clang” sound to make each piece fluffy and airy.

Kudos to them anyway, as temperature of cooking was hot and some of them had plenty of plasters on their hands – the tough work of being a street hawker.
