Haji Lane has become a popular tourist spot in the recent years with the emergence of many indie and artistic concepts along the entire street.
The Arab Street area is also popular for its many Halal and Muslim-owned cafes and eateries in the vicinity.
Walking down the entire stretch of Haji Lane can be really hot and humid in Singapore’s weather, and there is always a craving for something cold and refreshing on the go.
There are a number of ice cream places such as aROMA Gelato Experience at Arab Street, Hokkaido Ice Cream Puff at Haji Lane and Lickety Ice Cream & Waffles located at Bussorah Street.
I found a hole-in-the-wall softserve place along the hipster Haji Lane. Moosh is Muslim-owned and uses 100% Halal-certified ingredients in their softserve and toppings.
The menu is short but yet concise at the moment, with Softserve that comes in 2 sizes: Regular ($4 – 4.50) and Large ($5.50 – 6), Cone and Kurtos (Kürtőskalács, a Hungarian chimney cone).
Both the Cone and Kurtos will be offered at a later date.
With just 6 flavours available at the moment that comes with preset toppings, think Strawberry, Blueberry, Nutella Brownie Cheesecake, Smores, Apple Crumble and their bestseller Ondeh- Ondeh.
Ondeh Ondeh is a traditional pastry: green-coloured (pandan) ball of rice cake filled with liquid palm sugar (such as gula melaka) and coated in grated coconut.
The Ondeh Ondeh SoftServe (Regular $4.50/ Large $6) comes with fixed toppings such as desiccated coconut and coconut flakes, with green pandan sauce drizzled on the walls of the cup and on the surface of the softserve.
Made with gula melaka (brown sugar) as the base of the Ondeh Ondeh soft serve, the sweetness level was just right and I could finish a large sized cup on my own without feeling too jelak (rich).
I would say that the portion is really substantial and generous, for the price of $6 of a large cup.
Despite the soft serve melting quickly (blame it on Singapore’s weather), the soft serve was surprisingly very smooth, and consistent in their texture.
Sedap! The balance of ingredients in the cup was just right, with desiccated coconut and coconut flakes that added some crunch to the overall texture.
Chocolate lovers will probably enjoy the Nutella Brownie Cheesecake Softserve (Regular $4.50/ Large $6), topped with chocolate sauce, brownie crumbs and chocolate malt.
While the combination in the cup may sound too chocolatey, the base of the soft serve was smooth, creamy, mildly sweet with a hint of hazelnut like a Ferrero Rocher.
Their softserve was pretty delicious, and I am already looking forward to their cone and Kurtos that they will be offering in the future.
Hope to see more local flavours being added soon to represent the culture rich Kampong Glam area.
