Prodigal Cafe – Prodigal Roasters Opens A 2nd Outlet With Expanded Food Menu, At Tai Seng

Prodigal Cafe is no stranger to frequent patrons of their sister outlet Prodigal Roasters located at Ang Mo Kio.

Good news, they now serve ‘proper’ food at their outlet near Tai Seng. This is especially when their first outlet is faced with space limitations and narrow seating spaces.

The not-so-good news, the second outlet is as ulu as their sister outlet, some 10-ish minutes of walking time from the nearest Tai Seng MRT station.

“Is it located within some industrial building?”, that’s the first thing that came across my mind when I saw their location on Google Maps.

It turned out that they had taken over the space once occupied by My Sister Bakes (that’s the name of a cafe by the way), in the old housing estate.

There is an interesting rationale behind the name “prodigal” which means “lavish and extravagant”.

From another perspective, the Parable of the Prodigal Son tells about the unconditional lavish love and grace of a father.

Owner Glen Ho hopes that the team behind Prodigal Roasters can be ‘prodigal’ in their passion for coffee and good food too, and wishes to bring the best they can give to the neighbourhood.

Decked in minimalist white walls and brown furnitures, the hole-in-the-wall Prodigal Roasters had grown in size, with a total of 28 seats (including 8 seats at the bar table) at Prodigal Cafe.

With table and chairs available, they are now able to offer an expanded menu that includes hot food such as Grilled Salmon ($17), Chicken Stroganoff ($15) and Grilled Cheese ($10).

The pricing of the Coffee ($3.50 – $6.50) and Pastries ($5 – $6) is somewhat similar to their sister outlet at Ang Mo Kio.

With 2 coffee beans roasted in-house available at any one time, Prodigal Cafe changes their selection of coffee beans on a monthly basis, and is continuously sourcing for new beans from all over the world.

With a choice of San Francisco Nicaragua and Garut Prengar West Java during my visit, my cup of Dirty ($5) was crafted using the former.

Even though it’s a single origin, it’s probably one of the best coffee I had drank recently which was very smooth, bright and balanced without being too acidic.

Every mouthful was refreshing with a citrusy and chocolatey taste.

I had the Chicken Stroganoff ($15) which was the new addition to this outlet.

Comes with a protein packed grilled chicken, portobello mushroom, caramelised onions and shaved parmesan cheese, I wished that there was some carbs such as pasta to go with it.

The grilled chicken thigh seasoned with pepper and salt was pretty tender and flavourful, and went well with the mushroom, onion and cream sauce too.

Pastries are all baked in house, and varies from cakes to tarts.

Prices vary from $5 to $6 and include their signature Miso Cheese Tart ($6).

The Double Milk Tea Cake ($5) I had came with a layer of milk tea cream on top of dense but moist milk tea cake.

The level of sweetness was just right, and I appreciated the berries which added some citrus-ness to the entire combination.

Prodigal Cafe is off to a steady start with fans of their sister outlet visiting on their first day of opening.

Somehow Prodigal Cafe reminds me of Nylon Coffee Roasters.

Both roast their own coffee beans, situated within the heartland estates, require a fair bit of walking from the nearest MRT station and yet garner a group of loyal supporters.
