When Garang Grill first opened at Swan Lake Avenue, it attracted some media fanfare as it was an offshoot of the popular New Ubin Seafood.
However, its 2nd outlet at Apex @ Henderson seemed a lot quieter, with minimal publicity going on.

The first Garang Grill is done in collaboration with Slake and its chef Jeremy Cheok, and offers dishes of fierce, bold charcoal flavours that is uniquely Singaporean.
Its various dishes of Crispy Pork Jowl, Lemak Mussels, Garang Vegetable Platter, Garang Rice, USDA Beef, and Grilled Barramundi Fillet received positive reviews.

I was wondering about both the offerings and price-point of the Henderson branch.
The area is surrounded by many office and factory workers, and I am not entirely sure if grilled meats would appeal to them – whether during lunch or after work. (I would think that fuss-free zhi char or a chye png shop would be more suitable. Would have said rice bowl, but think Singapore’s market reaching the point of saturation.)

Main courses included USDA Prime Rib Eye ($90 for 500 grams, $55 for 250 grams), USDA Black Angus Beef Short Ribs ($72 for 600 grams, $45 for 300 grams), St Louis BBQ Pork Ribs ($28), New Zealand Lamb Cutlets ($28) and Lime Leaf Chicken ($26).

Feeling the possible pinch in the wallet, I ordered the USDA Black Angus Beef Short Ribs.
Marinated and finished with a Gula Melaka glaze, the meat pieces were tender with that charred-smoky aftertaste.

The one thing that I was concerned about was that it didn’t taste as hot as I remembered to, considering it would have been grilled “fiercely”. (I could imagine someone saying, ”It’s the photographing…”, but I was hungry and only took a couple of shots.)
It could be a combination of the air-con which was colder than usual, and the grilling style.

The complimentary Garang Rice can be described as a cousin of New Ubin Seafood Heart Attack Fried Rice – fried with beef fats, a version less oily and less rich.
While the overall flavours were still there, the rice lacked the wok-hei element and felt it could be up a few notches. My friend commented that it tasted out of the box and fried.

Service was extremely earnest. Maybe because there were not many customers anyway.
However, this Garang Grill unfortunately felt and tasted like a poorer sibling of the original. Perhaps also some tweaking of the menu is needed, to attract diners in the vicinity.
