[Taipei] Two stalls from Ningxia Night Market 寧夏夜市 made it into the inaugural Taipei Michelin Bib Gourmand.
One’s Rong’s Pork Liver豬肝榮仔, and the other is Liu Yu Zai Fried Taro Ball 劉芋仔芋餅.
Liu Yu Zai Fried Taro Ball is easily the stall with the longest queue, but the hawkers were steady and fast.
I went about early evening, and the queue took about 15 minutes. While waiting, you can watch how the hawkers wrap the balls with stead-fast hands. (Though I read about rude service here, hopefully you don’t experience it.)
Two items are on sale: Deep Fried Taro Balls (TWD15, SGD0.80), and Deep Fried Taro Balls with Salted Egg Yolk (TWD20, SGD0.90). I suggest getting both – you won’t regret it.
The Taro Balls contain soft savoury pork floss with a ball of salted egg yolk wrapped within.
As you take a bite, you could marvel at the softness and natural sweetness of the taro, along with the varying textures of the fillings.
Simple pleasures.
Between the two, I preferred the ball wrapped with salted egg, especially when it was hot and almost lava-melty.
I do know of people who think this is over-rated. With a Michelin-status, I guess.
