Kam Fung Cafe 金鳳茶餐廳 – For Chicken Pie, Polo Bun And Satay Instant Noodles, At Wan Chai Hong Kong

[Hong Kong] Funny how satay comes from this part of the world (South East Asia), but you don’t get much Satay Instant Noodles here in Singapore.

So I make it a point to have Satay “Ding Mian” whenever I visit Hong Kong’s Cha Chaan Teng – their style of traditional cafes. (The word “Ding” comes from 出前一丁 Chu Qian Yi Ding, the Nissin instant noodles that found incredible success in Hong Kong.)

Kam Fung Cafe 金鳳茶餐廳 at Wan Chai serves a pretty good rendition of the breakfast dish.

The café is more known for its two other things – Chicken Pie and Polo ‘Pineapple’ Buns, till I realised that even its HK Milk Tea enjoys certain fame.

The old style Hong Kong café enjoys brisk business and support from tourists, many came armed with guide books.

Interestingly the day I was there, a Korean travel show were also filming there, an indication of its popularity.

Space is rather cramped though, and customers often have to find themselves sitting with other strangers.

Service was not Australian Dairy Company-style rude, but you cannot say they are friendly.

Well, the typical Cha Caan Teng service – they serve you promptly and quick, and get impatient when you take too long to order.

The Chicken Pie (HK$11, SGD1.85) was one of my favourite items, with a butter-heavy crust and hot and moist flavourful fillings.

Although the Pineapple Polo Bun (HK$6, SGD1) came colder than I would have liked it to be, the exterior layer and sweet and crisp – to the point of slightly crunchy, with a nice contrast to the fluffy interior that tore apart easily.

There are no pineapples in this bun (just in case you do not know), and are so called due to its outer appearance looking like the fruit.

Some might have overlooked that the Cold Hong Kong Milk Tea (HK$22, SGD3.70) came without ice, which meant it stayed non-diluted with that smooth milky texture and delicate bitterness.

I enjoyed this cup because it did not have that siap siap (bitter) aftertaste. It was slightly pricey though.

The Satay Instant Noodles (they call it “Gong Zai Meen” here) was a pleasant surprise.

The beef slices were generous in portion, soft and well-marinated. It had the unique nutty flavour and wasn’t overly spicy.

Feedback for the other items was a couple of hits and misses. In general, a rather-touristy café, but you could still have delicious Chicken Pies and experience this unique Hong Kong café.

The café is a 5 minute walk from Wan Chai MTR Station Exit B2. While you are here, you can venture to Lee Tung Avenue a street away, or explore the area of hipster cafes.
