BAOBAO – Kong Bak Bao and Ricebowl With Mod-Fusion Twist, At Bugis Junction

When my female friends mention they want to buy ”Bao Bao”, it really means I got to carry the purchased bags for them later.

This is a different Bao Bao.

BAOBAO is a takeaway store at the basement of Bugis Junction food street which offers “Kong Bak Bao” (pork belly buns) and Rice Bowls with a mod-fusion twist.

Occasionally, they are also seen participating as pop-up stall in other events.

While conventional “Kong Bak Bao” comes with a piece of pork belly braised in dark soy sauce and sandwiched between steamed buns, BAOBAO does their buns differently with various stuffing and house dressings.

This is somewhat similar to the Bao Makers (at least when they first started out), but at a takeaway concept and wallet-friendly price.

When you eat Bao Bao (吃包包), will you be full (吃饱饱)?

Well, at $3.90, the size of the Bao was almost my palm size and comes with a variety of filling such as Pulled Pork, Spicy Beef, Chicken Masala and Fish Tempura.

While my expectation wasn’t high given the affordable pricing, I was pleasantly surprised that the texture of the Bao was moist and fluffy at first bite.

I liked how the Pulled Pork Bao was paired with Korean gochujang dressing, complimented with pickled radish and crushed peanuts for a refreshing take which neutralized the rich dressing flavour.

My friend even joked that it reminded her of Vietnamese Banh Mi. Must be those similar ingredients used.

The Chicken Masala Bao also impresses with its spiced chicken chunks doused with cilantro-yogurt and salsa verde for a zesty kick. Very much similar to the yogurt dressing in Indian food.

If you prefer rice to bao, rice bowls for Pulled Pork, Spicy Beef and Chicken Masala are also available at $7.90.

I also tried the Spicy Beef Ricebowl. While it tasted similar to Pulled Pork, I found the beef slightly tough for my liking.

As this is a takeaway concept, it would better if BAOBAO could put in more thoughts in the takeaway packaging, like how Japanese convenience store does it, to prevent soggy buns due to heat vapour or overdosage of dressing.
