Old Chang Kee – The NEW Nasi Lemak Chicken’O, And OCK Café At SingPost Centre

My social media pages have been flooded with photos of the intriguing green-coloured “Nasi Lemak Curry Puff”.

Better known as the NEW Nasi Lemak Chicken’O by Old Chang Kee, I just knew I needed to try this hybrid puff.

Most Singaporeans should know the halal-certified Old Chang Kee, famous for their hot crispy curry puffs with chicken chunk fillings, and golden-yellow snacks on sticks.

Incidentally, the Michelin Guide Singapore listed Old Chang Kee as “5 of The Top Curry Puff Picks in Singapore”, and announced that the Singapore snack chain will make its European debut at London’s Covent Garden.

With the Nasi Lemak wave in Singapore (remember the Nasi Lemak Burger?), the Nasi Lemak Chicken’O was still quite unexpected – the ‘marrying’ of one of Singapore’s favourite local dish and OCK Curry Puff.

The seasonal puffs are sold at one for $2.00 each or two for $3.50 at all Old Chang Kee outlets, while stocks last.

I observed that most people in the queue got two or much more anyway – probably for the office colleagues and family.

The green from the puff pastry comes from pandan essence and permitted edible food colouring, therefore there was that faint fragrance as you take bites.

Ah oh! It did taste like Nasi Lemak in a puff, better than what I imagined it to be. My mind probably needed so tuning, as this was a familiar yet exciting taste.

Each Nasi Lemak Chicken’O contains the favourite Nasi Lemak ingredients such as egg, chicken, peanuts, ikan bilis and the most important sambal chili.

There was no potatoes added, but I am not complaining as there was quite a bit of chicken chunks.

This was spicier than the normal, just a level up, which gave it that kick.

I read some online reviews. People loved it for the creativity and fun factor; while there were others who wished there was rice inside. Too much carbs, maybe?

Good to know: the puffs are prepared using Healthier Oil as endorsed by Health Promotion Board.

Old Chang Kee Café at SingPost Centre
I tried the Nasi Lemak Chicken’O again at SingPost Centre, which serves not just the usual Old Chang Kee’s hot piping puffs and snacks, but other varieties of ready meals.

That includes local favourites of Curry Chicken and Nasi Lemak, as well as varieties of economical Bee Hoon such as Black or White Bee Hoon, Dry Laksa Bee Hoon or Dry Mee Siam Bee Hoon.

There were many office workers queuing up in the morning to get their takeaways. The café opens from 7am onwards during the weekdays.

Another major reason why is the price start from as low as $1.50 only, making it very affordable. You can also add a cup of kopi or teh to complete the meal.

This is also a dine-in café concept, decorated in nostalgic Nanyang flavour with an element of fun. Some of the specialty food items available there include:

Curry Chicken with Rice, Bee Hoon or Loaf ($5.50)
The thing I liked best about this OCK Curry Chicken… the soft potatoes.

The bowl is completed with fresh tender chicken, and gravy moderately spicy. You may find the Curry Chicken tasting lighter and healthier than usual. That is because there is no coconut milk added.

Also available are Dry Curry Chicken ($5.50) and Rendang Chicken ($5.90) which can be mixed with bee hoon, rice or nasi lemak rice. Add in those sotong balls or other OCK snacks for a more satisfying treat.

Bee Hoon
There are 5 types of Bee Hoon varieties to choose from – Black Bee Hoon ($1.50), White Hoon ($1.50), Dry Laksa Bee Hoon ($2.50), Dry Mee Siam Bee Hoon ($2.50), and Satay Bee Hoon ($2.50).

Everyone seems to have their own favourites. Black Bee Hoon for that nostalgic childhood taste; White Bee Hoon if you prefer something less heavy; or Dry Laksa Bee Hoon which gives the plain vermicelli that distinct aromatic-spicy flavour.

Unanimously, we all enjoyed the Dry Mee Siam Bee Hoon, perhaps because it was also the most flavourful.

Old Chang Kee Snacks
Curry’O, Spring’O, Fishball, Sotong Head, Sotong Wing, Fish Fillet, Big Fishball, Sotong Ball, Sardine’O, Prawn Nugget, Crab Nugget, Cheezy Chicken Ball…

Needless to say, we all got our favourites and it is tough to resist temptation walking past the kiosk or shop without getting one.

My personal weakness is the Chicken Wings, because they are larger, crispier and juicer. What’s yours?

If you are the Nasi Lemak fan, other than the Nasi Lemak Chicken’O, get the Nasi Lemak Rice ($5.50 – $5.90) paired with Curry Chicken (gravy or dry), Chicken Rendang, and of course the crispy Chicken Wing.
