Duck & Waffle – Highest 24/7 Restaurant in London, For All Day Brunch With The Best Views

[London] Duck & Waffle is the highest 24/7 restaurant in London, considered one of the “must-visit” food places in the city.

It is vibrant and modern, serving British and European cuisine from the summit of London’s tallest building, the 230-m tall 110 Bishopsgate a.k.a. Heron Tower.

A spin-off called Duck & Waffle Local has also opened on Haymarket Street.

It offers all-day-dining, literally, as it serves diners from sunrise to sunset, all night and every hour in between, 7 days a week.

Book way in advance if you want to get prime time slots, unless you do not mind the odd hours of 3:00am or 6:30am. There are diners who reserve particular hours to catch the sunrise or sunset.

If you are jetlagged and wide awake at 3am, try your luck and book online that 6am breakfast slot.

I booked it about a month in advance.

There is a dress code though, defined as “Casual Elegance” and they sent an email to remind guests to refrain from wearing athletic trainers or ripped jeans. No basement caps or flip flops.

During the evening, they encourage a collared shirt or blazer. (Because of that, I had to bring extra shoes to London because I usually go around in comfy sneakers. BUT I did spot other guests wearing trainers. Darn.)

Also keep in mind the dining reservation is limited to ONE HOUR.

All right. So the day has arrived. A private entrance at Heron Tower will transport you to the 40th floor in 40 seconds via 2 scenic lifts running at 5mps.

Designed by no less than CetraRuddy, an award-winning international architectural firm, the restaurant is a visual feast.

An open kitchen lets you see the cooking as it happens.

Floor-to-ceiling windows provide diners a stunning view across London, all the way up to Wembley and down to docklands. There are external terraces too.

The food is a playful take on traditional British cuisine and its European influences, using local, seasonal and sustainable ingredients.

Dishes are created for sampling and sharing, complemented by iconoclastic cocktail experience.

Executive Chef Tom Cenci joined Duck & Waffle in 2012 as a Senior Sous Chef. Prior to that, he worked at various Michelin starred-restaurants including Cliveden Hotel, 1 Lombard Street Restaurant, and Laurent Restaurant in Paris. He won multiple awards when he ran Gastro Pub in West London for 1 year.

Working with him is Rich Woods, head of spirit and cocktail development, a.k.a. The Cocktail Guy – bearded and bespectacled. He has a self-titled book from which some of the artisan cocktail recipes at Duck & Waffle were taken.

Its signature dish Duck & Waffle (£18, SGD33.23) is a crispy duck leg confit resting on a fluffy waffle, then topped with crisp fried duck egg.

Served with some mustard maple syrup on the side, the duck was excellently crisp on the outside, juicy inside.

There are a number of online reviews/comments stating it was “over-rated”, I think it was a good-enough treat for this view, at this price.

Some were raving about the classic breakfast item Duck Egg En Cocotte (£13, SGD23.92) with wild mushrooms, Gruyere, and truffle soldiers.

I actually enjoyed this much better than the signature. Other than the fact that the smell of the truffle hits you upon serving on the table, it was a gooey flavoursome mix that reminded me of shakshuka (without the spices).

The Bacon Wrapped Dates (£3.50, SGD6.44) with linguica (a Portuguese-style smoke cured pork sausage, seasoned with garlic and paprika), Manchego, and mustard is a popular snack pick, as well the more exotic BBQ-Spiced Crispy Pig Ears (£5, SGD9.22).

Angus beef aficionados can enjoy it either as Angus Beef Tartare (£11, SGD20.31) with pickled onions, mustard, marmite egg yolk & dripping croutes, or as 38-day Aged Angus Bone-in Rib-eye 500g steak (£42, SGD77.55 for 2), with greens, grape husk mustard & caper butter sauce.

Vegetarians, vegans and those looking for gluten-free dishes will have lots of options here.

Duck & Waffle has an energetic atmosphere, with a dining experience that is welcoming and intimate. Service is generally prompt, though it would depend on who you get in terms of attentiveness.

Its gorgeous interiors and breath taking London views make it a winning choice for after-work drinks (in style!), first dates or when you just want to impress someone.

Perfect for brunch, a leisurely lunch, or late night snacking with a view. Catch a sunrise (or sunset) depending on your whim.

Remember, it is open for business 24/7.

The nearest tube station is Liverpool Street Tube Station, only 2 minutes away from Heron Tower.
By train, it’s about 900 meters (approx. 10-minute walk) from the Bank DLR Station.

If you’re going by bus, you can ride from Custom House, Victoria Dock to Bishopsgate, Wormwood Street. Travel time is around 30 minutes. Heron Tower is a minute walk away.
