HRVST by Kilter Avenue – Vegan Restaurant & Bar In The CBD, Beautiful Space And Creative Food

HRVST, short for “Harvest”, is a vegan restaurant at OUE Downtown Gallery launched by boutique gym Kilter Avenue.

Just so you know, I am a meat-lover (it shows); the friend who asked me for this meal was one as well. He thought he needed something to excite his taste buds again.

Of course, I was mildly surprised he asked me to ”jia chye”. But, why not?

Getting to the restaurant may be slightly tricky, located at Level 5 on one end of the building.

The space is relatively huge for a land-scarce Singapore (especially for CBD area), comprising of a gym, both indoor and outdoor dining area, and a bar. We wondered about the rich investors because even the furnishing was done up quite attractively.

You can imagine that the owners probably envisioned a lifestyle concept, in which one can work out; make like-minded friends; and have healthy, tasty vegan food at the same place.

Brave attempt.

The kitchen is helmed by Chefs Addis Tan and Dylan Choong, who have previously worked at Tippling Club, Esquina and Cheek By Jowl. Found this out after the meal, which probably explains the design of those dishes.

HRVST’s menu is 100% vegan – no milk, eggs or animal products used, divided into appetisers, mains and desserts.

There is only a couple of selection in each course, with some of the recommendations including Soy Satay with peanut sauce and veggie chip ($10); BKT (Bak Kut The) Barley Risotto ($16); Pumpkin Gonocchi in Tomyum Broth ($16); Sourdough with nut spread ($14); ending with desserts of Matcha Ice Cream with Blood Orange Puree ($8) and Caramelised Pineapple Ring with Clove Ice Cream ($8).

You could see the creativity in some of the dishes. For example, using king oyster mushroom to represent “scallops” ($12) with the attempt to re-create the texture and mouthfeel.

The Tomyum Broth in the handmade Pumpkin Gnocchi ($16) was cooked without the use of seafood, a challenge to demonstrate that vegan dishes need not be bland. Corn was used to provide that sweetness, while coconut milk added the creaminess.

I didn’t think “tomyum” would be best to describe the base – it took up perhaps 30% max of that tangy-sour-spicy-sweet characteristic. Though this would probably still be the most memorable dish tried.

For the price-point, HRVST did well in achieving well-plated dishes with good mix of flavours.

My main concern? I wished that the food was heartier and portions were more.

This would have worked better in a bistro or semi-fine dining setting, perhaps not after a gym session when I need some vegan food to fill up and get that protein intake.

Despite ordering four dishes to share between the two of us, we ended up texting each other a hour later…”Hungry leh.”

Still a stylish place with huge potential.
