Korean pretzel snack stall Monnani Kwabaeggi 못난이꽈배기 has opened at the basement of Hong Leong Building basement in the CBD. The brand is brought in by the people behind Chewy Junior.
The snack has been called “ugly pretzel” due to its twisted shape. The pieces are deep-fried and with doughy texture, like a “Korean Doughnut”.
There is currently more than 110 branches of Monnani Kwabaeggi ins South Korean, and approximately half a million pretzels are sold in a day.
You will see the kiosk once you take the escalator down to the basement, but it can be slightly hard to find if you are not familiar with the building. Great to see there is a sitting area at the side.
Offerings included Original ($1.40), Yuzu ($1.70), Korean Red Bean ($1.70), Premium Cheese ($1.90), and Premium Sausage ($3).
The dough is said to be 7 different types of fermented grain, made fresh in store, then deep fried till crispy on the outside with soft sticky rice cake like texture on the inside.
I had a Korean Red Bean, and the first thing it reminded me of was a ”Ham Chim Peng”! (a red-bean filled deep fried dough often sold with you tiao.)
The difference was the Kwabaeggi has a slight chewy soft texture, compared to the local versions which are more airy. Though I wished it was somewhat less greasy.
The Premium Sausage came with a juicy chicken sausage within, great for those who would be looking for a savoury snack around here.
Monnani Kwabaeggi’s offering is something I won’t mind getting if I am in the vicinity. The only things stopping me would be its slightly hard-to-find location, and price-point.
When the novelty runs out, then OLs may think twice about spending more on a deep fried snack.
