Katasumi Koohii 一隅珈琲 – This Secret Artsy Café ‘Transports’ You To Taiwan, Vibes & Feel On Point

There are just times when I would like to hide away from the noisy crowd, while enjoying my me-time over a cup of good coffee.

And I finally found the ideal spot.

Unassumingly located within Grassroots Book Room (草根书室), possibly Singapore’s sole standing indie bookstore which holds huge collection of Chinese books, I initially thought I found myself at the wrong address.

The moment I set my eyes on the space, it was as if I was transported back to Taiwan’s café like Monga Coffee Roasters 丸花豆倉 and Jack & NaNa Coffee Store.

This is the type of place they could have shot a 小幸运 MTV.

Every single detail – the coffee counter, décor layout and the owner brewing coffee was very much on point with the 文青 (literary arts) flair.

The owners are also Taiwanese by the way.

At coffee store like this, I would always go for their Hand Drip Coffee ($6) to watch the skillful barista in action doing the pour over.

They also used lighter roasted single origin beans which the coffee flavor would be better expressed through hand drip.

I also had their Assam Milk Tea ($7) *nothing to do with Assam Laksa* which boasted rich tea aroma.

There were also a small selection of cakes baked in-house by the lady owner and cake flavor changes on a regular basis.

I was very much sold to their Black Sesame Chiffon ($8) which came soft, fluffy and infused with black sesame fragrance. Topped with a layer of sesame cream which further enhanced its flavor.

The plain-looking Seasalt & Butter Pound Cake ($7) also stole my taste palate with its soft sponge-like core and surprisingly crusty exterior. There was a hint of seasalt to give it a slight savoury touch.

Despite the place being almost fully occupied, I was impressed that the patrons here are more refined and they don’t converse in a disturbingly loud manner.

Just like Taiwan.

Of course, we as patrons should be mindful and play a part in maintaining the peacefulness and tranquility at every other cafes.
