Scissors Paper Stove
9 Teck Chye Terrace Singapore 545720
Tel: +65 6242 0021
Opening Hours: 12pm – 12am

Spanish Tapas With Asian Flavours, Instagrammable Restaurant Found In Serangoon
The menu at Scissors Paper Stove is generally divided into mains, tapas, desserts, and drinks, and prices are kept affordable – the restaurant has waived off additional service charge and GST. What you see on the menu is all NETT pricing.

Tapas take centrestage, with 16 options and periodic additions – depending on the ‘season’, to cater to diners who come back regularly.

Priced at 2 for $20, 4 for $36, 6 for $48, the way to experience more and get more ‘discounts’ is to gather a bigger group to share the food.

The recommended main dish is the Cartafata ($28 nett) – fresh sea bass and mixed seafood oven-stewed in a sealed bag with lemongrass, lime leaves and tomato base, which helps retain the flavours and aroma. Paired with Thai Yellow Fried Rice. Scissors Paper Stove (Teck Chye Terrace)

Panamericana
Sentosa Golf Club, 27 Bukit Manis Road, Singapore 0998
Tel: +65 6253 8182
Opening Hours: 12pm – 11pm (Wed – Fri), 9am – 11pm (Sat & Sun), Closed Mon & Tue

Cuisine from the North, Central and South Americas
This is slightly far to get to. Panamericana is a casual bar and grill, located at the far south at Sentosa Golf Club.

You can feel the warmth of a welcoming home through its bright open space and rustic vibes, as well as a breezy terrace and garden with sweeping panoramic views.

With an asador (or barbeque) at its heart, the restaurant specializes in farm-to-fire cuisine, offering succulent grilled whole meats, greens, grains, alongside fresh seafood, game and street foods typical of the region.

Signature dishes include Cuban-Style Corn ($12), Snapper Ceviche ($16), Lamb ($50 for 350g) and Whole Colombian Chicken ($40).

Good Old Days Bistro
Kampong Glam Conservation Area, 337 Beach Road Singapore 199565
Opening Hours: 11:00am – 10:00pm, Closed Sun

Nostalgic Themed Bistro With Burgers Served In A Vintage Box
Good Old Days Bistro is a Western-fusion eatery located along the row of shop houses at Beach Road. Note: This is not to be confused with Good Old Days Restaurant at Sentosa.

The interior is made up of a mish-mash of things that all seemed to work together, from old radios, photos of Singapore in the 1960s and 70s (I recognise some of the buildings!), toys and F&N glass cups.

I was intrigued with the Crispy Oatmeal Chicken Burger ($13.90), with buns freshly baked with fruit or vegetable powders for its colour and flavour, with no added preservatives or colourings.

It came interestingly / gimmicky served in a Vintage Box – which I have seen overseas but not quite here in Singapore. Good Old Days Bistro (Beach Road)

Haikee Brothers

Soy Sauce Chicken To Live For, By 3rd Generation Hawkers
Haikee Brothers is helmed by 3rd generation hawkers James and Joseph Wang with another stall at Bedok North Street 1, while the restaurant at Chinatown Point is a partnership – which explains its extensive menu.

Recommended dishes include HKB Soy Chicken Ramen ($6.50), Home Style Braised Pork Trotters Bee Hoon ($16.80 meant for 2 pax), XO Seafood Bee Tai Bak ($9.50), Sizzling Ma La Niang Dou Fu ($8.50), Laksa Seafood Fried Rice ($9.50), and HKB Soy Sauce Lor Mee ($7.50).

The Soy Sauce Drumstick Noodles ($6.50) certainly lived up to its name, the chicken glossy and looked thoroughly braised in dark sauce with springy noodles also drenched in sauces. Hai Kee Brothers (Chinatown Point)

Sushi Shiki Hanamaru
Orchard Central #B2-11/29/44/48 181 Orchard Road Singapore 238896 (Somerset MRT)

Opening Hours: 11am – 2pm, 5pm -11pm (Mon – Fri), 11am – 11pm (Sat – Sun)

Under-The-Radar Sushi Restaurant At The Basement Of Orchard Central
A less-talked about sushi restaurant has opened at the basement of Orchard Central.

Sushi Shiki Hanamaru 花まる is the latest addition to Hokkaido Marche next to Don Don Donki, though it is operated as a restaurant concept rather than a food stall like the rest.

There are currently 13 sushi stores in Hokkaido, with 3 in Tokyo – most operated as a Kaiten-style conveyor belt sushi restaurant.

Sushi starts from $4.80++ for a Ika (squid) Ingiri Sushi, to $7++ for Akami Bluefin Tuna, $10++ for Chutoro (medium fatty tuna), $12++ for Ootoro (fatty tuna), to $17++ Sea Urchin Sushi.

The plus point is, the fish used is imported from various parts of Japan with some not so common varieties, and its rather pictorial menu would provide brief descriptions of what is included in each sushi. Sushi Shiki Hanamaru (Orchard Central)

Fu-Men Japanese Udon
16 Raffles Quay, #B1-17/18 Hong Leong Building, 048581
Tel: +65 6224 1134
Opening Hours: 10am – 8pm (Mon – Fri), 10am – 2:30pm (Sat), Closed Sun

Teppei’s Udon Shop At Raffles Place
Chef Teppei Yamashita is indeed on a roll. After another Man Man in Ubi, Men-Men Tei Ramen at Marina One, and even Teppei Syokudo in Hong Kong, he has opened an Udon eatery in the CBD at Hong Long Building.

Fu-Men serves up Hakata-style Udon from Fukuoka, characterized by mildly thick, soft and tender noodles.

The noodles are slightly slimmer as compared to the Sanuki style more commonly found in Singapore – offered at Marugame Udon and Tamoya Udon.

I went for the signature Gobo ($12) which came topped with Burdock Tempura, reminding me of the exceptional Zagin Soba from Hong Kong.

The tempura burdock pieces were deep fried with a light, not-too-greasy batter, with a soft crunch and retained its unique woodiness. Fu Men Japanese Udon (Hong Leong Building)

Hainanese Style Steamboat And Dishes At Chinatown Point
Talk about Hainanese style steamboat and the average diner may be more familiar with Thien Kee Steamboat at Golden Mile Tower.

People may just miss out Hainan Street Steamboat, located at a further corner at the basement of Chinatown Point.

There are actually other dishes such as Hainanese Satay ($16.80 per set), Hainanese Chicken ($16.80, $28.80), Hainanese Pork Chop ($16.80, $32.80), Deep Fried Prawns ($18.80, $36.80), and Hainanese Mixed Vegetable ($16.80, $21.80).

Its steamboat is priced at $38 for small, $48 for medium, and $58 for large.

The set came with a container of cabbage which was first added to the hot stock, along with sliced pork, chicken, prawns, fishballs, sliced fish, squid, pig’s liver, and a complimentary dish of 3 abalone. Hainan Street Steamboat (Chinatown Point)

Cheeky Modern Chinese Restaurant & Bar, With All Small Plates $10 And Below
The restaurant-bar serves up contemporary Asian dishes in a no-frills environment, with more than two dozen lucky cat figurines lining the bar. Hope those maneki-neko work.

While many similar places often have pricey menu, I was glad the price-point was still kept relatively comfortable to order more items.

Signature Zui Hong Lou small plates include Braised Pork Belly Bao ($9), Soup Dumplings ($7), Kung Pow Baby Octopus ($8), Crispy Squid ($8), and Szechuan Fries ($6); with some big plates such as Whole Fish Asian Style ($28), Soupy Clams ($16) and Tonkatsu ($14).

The Chong Qing Wings ($10) which were double-fried and tossed in Ma La spices were addictively salty and spicy in a good way, with a similar sensation of eating a snack out of a bag. Zui Hong Lou (Club Street)
