In true Japanese style, Haritts Donuts & Coffee ハリッツ has quietly opened in Singapore without a big fanfare, at Havelock II that might require some google searching. (The mall is across Clarke Quay Central FYI.)
Donut lovers would have heard of Haritts Donuts, located at Yoyogi-Uehara Tokyo, with branches in Taipei (No. 33, Lane 81, Fuxing North Road) and Taichung.
Over in Japan and Taiwan, their donuts are limited to maximum 3 per customer as they get sold out fast.
Born as a mobile café back in September 2004, it was known to introduce “a new genre of Japanese donuts” with no super sweet flavours or colourful exteriors.
What you get are donuts that are not even oily, with a chewy doughy texture, and not very sweet.
Flavours offered at the Singapore store include Original, Cinnamon Currants, Chocolate, Cream Cheese, Earl Grey, Matcha, Raspberry White Choco, Banana Choco, and Kaya – the local Singapore special.
Each are priced between $1.90 and $3.20, depending on the flavour you are get.
I read that it takes about 2 hours to make a single batch of 60 doughnuts due to the many intricate steps involved.
For example, the dough has to be fermented two to three times depending on the temperature and humidity; and each donut involves a five-minute frying process under low temperature.
There would be extra steps to drain and blot off the oil before dusting powder.
I had the Matcha Donut, made using Japanese flour and matcha powder from Uji, Kyoto.
If you are used to American style donuts, then you have to rethink about this. The soft fluffy ball of Matcha Donut had a pillow-like texture, and was doughy – almost like having matcha bread, with a notch of cream cheese itself.
I liked that it made a sweet afternoon treat that was not too heavy, and would go well with coffee. (And hey, they bothered to do latte art in a covered takeaway cup!)
However, I did wish that there were more fillings. When I had the Chocolate, I was initially disappointed when there was no chocolate within after taking a big bite.
Then, my chocolate appeared only somewhere towards the end. More will be great.
The Singapore store is mainly a takeaway concept, though there are three small round tables outside the shop.
Similar to its Japanese and Taiwanese counterparts, only limited stocks are available per day (I hear that it is 300), so these donuts may be sold out before closing time, especially the popular flavours.
