Oh, that is fast. Merci Marcel which is relatively newly opened at Tiong Bahru, has landed with another branch at Club Street.
Its popularity is partly being in the right place, at the right time.

Tiong Bahru has always been known for its hipster cafes, but has remained ‘stagnant’ in the last 1-2 years.
It was the opening of Merci Marcel with its Parisian inspired décor and breezy vibes at the outdoor seating area, which kept people talking about it.
And that French Toast.

Merci Marcel at Club Street should also create similar talking points. The CBD people need their breath of fresh air, literally or not.

The new outlet boasts of a 1,250 square feet space, with light-filled indoor and alfresco dining spaces.
It somehow was able to marry contemporary, casual and classy all of the same time with the décor, lined with plants, rattan light fixtures and Marcel Breuer-inspired furniture.
Another beautiful space. It will be easy to gush about this place.
In one way or another, diners are very focused on how it looks – am guilty of that. My friends call this ”That chio place at Tiong Bahru”, and perhaps the French would go ”Le restaurant est magnifique”.

The menu is organised into three sections: A rotating cheese menu, main dishes, and sharing plates. Unfortunately, there is no brunch menu in sight for now.
Mains include Duck Parmentier façon Marcel ($26) – a duck confit dish; Cauliflower Trilogy ($17) of
roasted, mashed and crunch cauliflower with grilled ham and organic soft boiled egg; Hokkaido Scallop Carpaccio ($29); Whole Catalonia octopus leg ($46) and T-bone New-Zealand Black Angus ($69) with oven baked potatoes and thick crème fraiche homemade Béarnaise sauce.

To top off the meal, add on a side of the Marinated Crab Rilletes ($18) or Ravioles de Royans ($18) – a French specialty of the Dauphiné region that is given an unexpected twist, and intertwined with Switzerland Tête de Moine cheese.

I ordered the cleverly named Croque Marcel ($22), the most ‘brunchy’ item of the lot with Bayonne ham (cured ham from southwest of France), fried organic egg, and French Morbier cheese, served on rustic sourdough bread.
It tasted as good or as straight-forward as it sounded, was a lovely brunch food sans any major surprises.

Service continues to be personable. Merci Marcel should become a dining attraction for the CBD crowd in the vicinity with its French social dining concept and easy-going vibes.
