Eat 3 Bowls – Classroom Themed Taiwanese Café With Tasty Lu Rou Fan And Mee Sua

There are quite a couple of places selling “Lu Rou Fan” aka Taiwanese Braised Pork Rice in Singapore, but there is usually something missing in terms of taste.

Eat 3 Bowls 呷三碗, a humble stall at Seah Imm Food Centre somehow managed to find that right balance, and attracted quite a good following over time.

You do get the feeling of being in Taiwan when you eat their stuff.

The good news, the stall has moved to a bigger space at Crawford Lane, located right between Tolido’s Espresso Nook and Hatter Street.

I loved the décor to bits.

This is partly because I was a teacher, and also had the thought of opening a classroom themed café once upon in my life.

The new outlet of Eat 3 Bowls is fashioned after a Taiwanese-style classroom in the 90s, with a big notice board, wooden tables and chairs that can be rearranged into rows, coupled with specially-customised army green canvas bags hanging around on chairs.

Its menu is designed like an exercise book, and you can also write your name on its cover which can be erased.

The female service staff went ”huan ying guang ling” in that typical sweet Rainie Yang style voice, ending almost every sentence with ”wo” (upward tone).

Only the Taiwanese girls can do that, so don’t try this in your office.

I almost wanted to order everything on the menu, so decided on the safe choice of an Eat Three Bowls Set ($15) of Braised Pork Rice, Chicken Rice, Oyster Intestine Mee Sua, along with a drink.

Good for two to share. (Actually, I think one hungry man can finish this.)

The Lu Rou Fan was as authentic as it gets, with pork meat and fats braised for a number of hours, scooped on fluffy-short grain rice with that right amount of partly-oily sauce.

Some places serve versions which are too dry or oily, while Eat 3 Bowl’s version is a dish of comfort.

My friend remarked that Taiwanese “Chicken Rice” is not often seen in Singapore.

I remember having 喷水鸡肉饭 (literally translated as “Fountain Chicken Rice”) in Taiwan’s Chaiyi, which is similar to Braised Pork Rice except that turkey meat is used.

The shredded chicken used was fresh and tender over here; the difference is that the rice was not as greasy as those I had in Taiwan.

Oyster Mee Sua always get people divided, as they are used to particular styles. I happen to like Eat 3 Bowls’ take.

Okay, I wished that the base could be more flavourful with “oomph” – think they are trying to be safe by not adding too much of anything; though the intestines were soft and consistency just right.

Another new find was the Brown Sugar Pearls with Fresh Milk ($3.80). This drink has been trending in Hong Kong of late, funny how it hasn’t exactly reached here. (Maybe 6 months late.)

Enjoyed the chewy sweet pearls, and that the cup was overall not too sweet.

I think Eat 3 Bowls will be a hit with Taiwanese food fans.

The main reservation is that they are just starting this shop, food needs time to prepare (rather than mass produced), so give them some time to settle down.

Opening hours are not settled yet – at the moment they are just opened during daytime. Check out here for updates.
