Mukshidonna Seoul 먹쉬돈나 – Popular Toppoki Restaurant Known For Its Budae (Army Stew) Base, At Samcheong-Dong

[Seoul] Mukshidonna 먹쉬돈나 is a well-known “Toppoki” (Korean rice cake) restaurant, though many tourists also know it as a Budae Jjigae (Army Stew) place.

Their most popular outlet is at Samcheong-dong, near Gyeongbokgung Palace.

Samcheong-dong is famous for its Bukchon Hanok (Korean traditional houses) Village, surrounded by both Gyeongbokgung Palace and Changdeokgung Palace.

Many tourists come here to rent traditional Korean costume of Hanbok, walking around taking #OOTDs. It’s quite amusing to watch, really. Maybe one day I will get enough courage to do that.

Therefore, Mukshidonna serves as a suitable backdrop, and resting place to have some spicy stew.

“Muk-shi-don-na” means Eat (Muk), Rest (Shi), Pay (Don), Leave (Na) when translated in English, meaning “Have your food, pay and leave”.

The restaurant just serves that one dish, filled with Toppoki / Tteokbokki (cylinder-shaped boiled rice cake) – the quintessential Korean traditional street food, in a hot stove with various toppings.

Here’s how to order:
– Choose from one of the 5 main bases of Seafood, Vegetables, Budae (Ham & Sausage), Bulgogi Beef, or Cheese. (5,000KRW, SGD6.12 per person)
– Add one type of noodles from Korean Vermicelli, Ramen, Korean Noodles or Udon (1,000KRW, SGD1.20)
– Pick a topping or more which includes Boiled Egg, Tempura, Oden, Grilled Dumpling, Seaweed Roll, Or Ham (1,000KRW, SGD1.20)

If you are keen, you can also add a topping of cheese, or fried rice at the end (2,000KRW, SGD2.40) where rice will be cooked together with the remaining sauces.

The good thing is, if you come in a pair or group, you can choose to mix the base (eg have both Budae and Bulgogi Beef).

I won’t know how best to describe this to a foreigner, but its base sauce was part-sweet-spicy with a mixture of Korean Gochujang sauce (red pepper paste) and baked beans, semi-thick like a stew.

The cheese added a touch of saltiness, and enveloped the springy instant noodles. There was something about Korean instant noodles which had the added bouncy quality.

Its signature rice cake, were light and chewy, unlike the average ones you find on the street which could be more elastic on the texture.

I will avoid ordering the dumplings (which tasted like refrigerated pre-packed ones) IF there is a next time.

Unlike other army stew base, Mukshidonna’s mild signature sauce will thicken as it boils.

Do not forget to leave some sauce in your pot for the fried rice if you do order.

This leftover thick gravy will be use to fry the sizzling fried rice which contains sweet corn and seaweed. For cheese lovers, choose the fried rice with cheese.

There have been mixed reviews about Mukshidonna. Some liked its affordable pricing, while others thought it is a typical “tourist trap”.

While I found it a comforting meal, I didn’t quite fancy the sweetish-take on the gravy – perhaps muted down to suit tourists, and wish there was more punch.
