Many of my favourite wanton mee stalls were gone just like that, may it be Kok Kee Wanton Mee or
Hua Feng Mian Jia which used to be at Tiong Bahru Food Centre.
It is usually the case of the family having no one to pass the skills to, because life of a hawker is just tough.
It made me treasure my hawker foods a lot more, and one of them is Ji Ji Wanton Noodle Specialist 基记面家 located at Hong Lim Food Centre.

The stall was set up in 1965 by Madam Lai’s parents, and she has handed over operations to her two daughters Kristen and Jill – who have both maintained their family’s recipe and legacy.
They really propelled to bigger fame a couple of years back, when it won the “Favourite Hawker” in the wanton noodles category by a huge margin, beating all the usual suspects.

The very person who recommended me this stall, was actually my mum who never failed to tabao 3 packets home. When I was a kid (okay, teenager), I would wait with anticipation at home for her to come back with the noodles.
Even though she is not around anymore, I still go back to Hong Lim quite regularly, because there is just this familiar taste of childhood.

When Hong Lim Food Centre was closed for renovations, I knew what withdrawal symptoms were like, UNTIL I found out that Ji Ji Wanton Noodle Specialist 基记面家 has opened their full-fledged eatery at Kreta Ayer Road.
I genuinely feel happy for the family.

The Ji Ji Signature Char Siew Wanton Noodle continue to be the best-selling noodle item, and it is priced at an affordable $4.80 – considering this is an air-conditioned space.
However, customers can opt for bigger bowls at $6.80 and $8.80 respectively.

Other noodle offerings include Dumpling Noodles, Braised Soya Sauce Chicken Noodles, Chicken Cutlet Noodles, Braised Chicken Feet Noodles, Mom’s Curry Chicken Noodles, Shredded Chicken and Ipoh Hor Fun.

If you have never tried their version of Wanton Noodles before, it is actually quite different from the usual.
The noodles have a chewy bite, slightly thicker than the normal mee kia and has no ‘ghee’ added.
They specially sourced for a supplier to make this special type of noodles, because they wanted customers to have a healthier offering, and not feel overly-full and bloated after a meal.
An inexpensive value-for-money bowl contains many ingredients, from char siew, sliced mushrooms, wantons – both soup and deep-fried, and vegetables.

But the main draw to me was the sauces – made in-house from a combination of sauces, deliciously savoury and fragrant with a sweet tinge.
Have it with the Braised Soya Sauce Chicken and you would know what I mean.

Now that Ji Ji has a bigger kitchen space, they have also expanded their menu with more sides such as Deep Fried Chicken Wings ($3.80 for 3), Deep Fried Dumplings ($4.80 for 4 pieces), Braised Chicken Feet ($4.00 for 6 pieces) and Muar Premium Fish Otah ($5.80).

They even have a special house-special range of “Bru” Coffee.

While I visited the NEW Ji Ji during opening days, I was told not to write about it until the scaffolding came down, and more tables and chairs arrived. (I listen to you, okay?)
I know many people miss their Wanton Noodles, good to know it is back.
