FlagWhite – Charming Cafe With Brunch And Cakes Made In-House, At Bukit Timah

While many hipster cafes around the world are called “Flat White” – named after one of the quintessential styles of 3rd wave coffee, this café located at Bukit Timah is called “FlagWhite”.

Other than the name being a pun on the flat white coffee, it came about when the team of owners almost thought of surrendering aka “raising a white flag”.

Of course, they didn’t.

A couple of years back, the number of such new café openings are a dime in a dozen. While the trend has been stagnant, the opening of a café like FlagWhite is still worth looking forward to.

It is a cosy and homely space nestled in the peaceful Bukit Timah neighbourhood, located opposite Bukit Timah Community Club.

They pride themselves in three things: good coffee, wholesome food, desserts made in-house.

The majority of their products such as coffee, chocolates and tea are sourced from local suppliers and craftspeople, as they believe in supporting local SMEs.

Other than Single Origin Teas ($7), Locally roasted Coffees ($3-7), FlagWhite offers a different Yay Chang Pin single origin espresso from Myanmar.

This is the first harvest of specialty grade coffees from the Yay Chang Pin Specialty Coffee Group.

The coffee is described as “a tropical fruit bomb in sweet strawberry cream”, with notes of pineapples, sweet prunes and dark grapes.

I often find many coffee blends in Singapore too acidic and strong (but it is all personal preference and popularity), so I happen to find this coffee more balanced, pleasant and smooth, while not losing its strength.

Bukit Timah folks who need good coffee know where to head to now.

Food wise, the recommended items are Chicken Parmigiana ($15) of brine breaded chicken, tomato concasse, sautéed mushroom, with mozzarella gouda cheese mix; and Flagwhite Burger ($16) comprising of sunny side egg, streaky bacon, cheddar, beetroot, onion crisp, BBQ aioli, all in a housemade brioche burger bun.

Unfortunately, I headed down during the opening days, and the full menu was not available yet.

Many Singapore cafes source cakes from elsewhere. This may not necessary be a bad thing, just that I see the same cakes surfacing in every other café, which make the place less unique.

Thankfully, FlagWhite also bakes its own cakes.

I would recommend their Signature Double Cheese, light and fluffy, with the cheese component not being overly rich.

Other choices include Single Origin Chocolate Tart with Almond Cream, and Lemon Meringue Tart with Almond Cream.

Interesting trivia: FlagWhite’s logo came about from a love for the whale as a symbol of peace and tranquility, which reflects the ambience and environment we strive to have.

The flag the whale is holding is pointed downwards, as a reminder to never give up, despite all the challenges faced.
