Matchacha 맛차차 – For All Things Matcha In A “Zen” Teahouse, At Seongsu-dong, Seoul

[Seoul] Amidst a concrete jungle, I think I managed to find the embodiment of the word “Zen” in Matchacha 맛차차.

This might just be the place for tea enthusiasts and anyone who simply loves all things Matcha.

Upon entering Matchacha, I could feel a different vibe compared to those typical hipster cafes in Korea.

There was no loud music playing and despite the place being filled with customers, everyone was talking softly.

It felt like I was transported to a teahouse in Japan.

They have several seating options, the traditional floor seating area, an outdoor seating area and my personal favourite, the “tea-bar”.

Took a count of the place and it holds at most 22 people. So make sure to come during non-peak hours if you don’t wish to wait.

They also provide blankets for you if you feel too cold sitting outside.

The Iced Matcha (8,000 won, SGD9.70), (take note, this is the version without milk) was very smooth and fragrant, and came together with a tea snack.

The tea snack, which had a nice subtle taste of yuzu, was surprisingly good enough to be something sold by itself (in my opinion).

The owner said they make it in-house and it takes around 6 hours of their time.

The Brown Rice Green Tea (6500 won, SGD7.90) had a very nice nutty taste and was light, perfect for people who wants something not too heavy.

As for the soft and creamy Matcha Pudding (4,500 won, SGD5.45), you can feel the green tea powder texture lingering with each bite.

Probably the item that is most well-known in Matchacha, is the Matcha Blanc (7,500 won, SGD9).

The Matcha Blanc is matcha that is whisked right in front of your eyes, mixed with milk and topped off with chamomile cream.

Watching the person make this drink felt like a performance, with the deep green colored Matcha flowing down the sides of the glass, SO “aesthetic”.

As a finishing touch, the stirrer looks like a branch stick, super apt for a café located near Seoul Forest.

“Performances” aside, the Matcha Blanc is good enough reason for you to visit Matchacha.

It was probably one of the best Matcha-based drinks I’ve had in quite a while, with the chamomile cream was a nice touch to elevate the richness of the Matcha.

Matchacha also sells tea leaves and powders, and a sampler kit of all their teas for anyone who wants to have a tea experience in the comfort of their home.

This café in Seongdong-gu provides a great tea experience and I definitely felt recharged after visiting, because of how relaxing the entire atmosphere is. I would say it’s worth spending a few hours here just to chill and relax.

Do take note that on some weekends, they are on reservation basis only as they conduct private classes such as tea-making and wellness.

They release information regarding these classes on their Instagram, so make sure to check before if you’re intending to visit on a weekend.
