What can be better than sinking your teeth into a juicy burger after a night out in the city?
The truth is that burgers are not that good for your health, but as soon as you take that first bite, every health concern simply goes away.
Singaporeans love burgers and would go above and beyond to find that perfect joint that serves these unhealthy, but yet so tasty snacks.
With the Shake Shack effect, I reckon local consumers will pay attention to more gourmet style of burgers.
As a note, The Market Grill, OverEasy, Fatboys the Burger Bar, Fatburger and Burger & Lobster are great places you can look for burgers as well.
To help you decide where to go, here is a list of the 10 must-try burger places in Singapore:
Three Buns Quayside
60 Robertson Quay, #01-01, Singapore 238252
Tel: +65 6909 7838
Opening Hours: 5pm – 12am, Last Order 11pm (Tue – Fri), 11am – 12am, Last Order 11pm (Sat – Sun), Closed Mon
While Three Buns was previously just available at Potato Head Keong Saik Road, they have now a stand-alone location at 60 Robertson Quay.
There is just something about that pillow-soft burger and particularly-juicy patty, that is so satisfying when you first hold with both hands, unwrap the burger and chomp it down.
The signature burgers such as the Baby Huey, Smokin’ B-Boy and Bun DMC, are made with top quality prime grass-fed Black Angus beef from Australia. To retain its flavour integrity, each patty is made from two prime cuts of beef, and simply seasoned with just kosher salt.
Even the buns are given the same utmost attention, using only locally-sourced and baked-fresh-daily artisanal breads.
The star of the Kool Herc Burger ($18) is its hefty 150g Black Angus beef patty, cooked at medium doneness.
This premium beef patty is laid onto a toasted demi brioche bun that is slathered with ketchup and 3 Islands Mayo (mayo, ketchup, sriracha). Lettuce and tomato are added for freshness to the bite, as well as cheese and pickles to fully complement the overall taste of the burger. Three Buns Quayside (Robertson Quay)
Burnt Ends
20 Teck Lim Road Singapore 088391
Tel: +65 6224 3933
Opening Hours: 11:45am – 2pm (Fri – Sat), 6pm – 12am (Tues – Sat), Closed Sun, Mon
1 Michelin star restaurant Burnt Ends is popular for many items, but there is THIS ONE burger that people just look forward to having again, and agin.
The Burnt Ends’ Sanger ($20) with delicious brioche burgers ever, counts as one of the best burger available in Singapore. Maybe the best.
Sinking my teeth into the pillow soft bun, I thought, “What sorcery is this? So fluffy.”.
The combination of ingredients made an appetizing play on the palates – savoury pulled pork shoulder, cool coleslaw, mildly-spicy smoky chipotle aioli all coming together in perfect harmony.
The only thing is, scoring a reservation at Burnt Ends is hard, requiring a 2-3 months advanced booking. If not, head over to Meat Smith for an alternative. Burnt Ends (Teck Lim Road)
BurgerLabo
41 Malan Road, Singapore 109454
Tel: +6694 0940
Opening Hours: 5pm – 11pm (Tues – Thurs), 5pm – 2am (Fri – Sat), Closed Sun, Mon
The Basic Burger ($23), affectionately known as “BB” has actually been through several years of experimentation till its present incarnation.
The 170g patty is not just any ordinary one, made from a blend of grass-fed Black Angus beef neck, Aomori Gyu ribeye, Toriyama Umami Wagyu A4 tenderloin, and Sendai Wagyu A5 brisket.
To achieve the ‘perfect’ balance and flavours.
One thing to note: the patties are cooked to medium/medium in consideration of food safety standards. I could imagine a good proportion of diners preferring a more pinkish inside.
It was a patty I couldn’t really fault – moist, juicy, sumptuous beef flavours coming together. The weakness perhaps, is in the bun – lacked of that special something, may it be softness or taste, that enhanced this to another level.
Shake Shack Singapore
78 Airport Boulevard Jewel Changi Airport #02-256 Singapore 819666
Opening Hours: 10am – 10pm (Mon – Sun)
Shake Shack fans call this THE BEST burger in the world (perhaps In-N-Out fans have differing things to say), and the fast-casual restaurant has become an institution of sorts to visit for foodies.
The queue at Jewel Changi Airport can be from 1-2 hours. The tip for most is to go during pre-opening hours (say 9:30am or so).
The ShackBurger ($9.20 for single, $12.90 for double) is the burger to order if you are a first-timer. Their burgers are known to be made with freshly ground 100% Angus beef – prized for its delicate texture, great taste and no added hormones.
People would like the potato roll (aka burger bun) having a pillowy softness and chew that went really well together.
The star is typically the sauce as it would add the extra dimension to the overall taste.
Given the choice, I would recommend to go for the double as the patties are indeed moist and juicy, much better than the ones you get from the average fast-food joint.
However, I did find the burger overall on the saltier side, and distracts from the juices of the meat. Shake Shack Singapore (Jewel Changi Airport)
Omakase Burger
Wisma Atria Shopping Centre, 435 Orchard Road #03-15 (Picnic Food Park), Singapore 238877 (Orchard MRT)
Tel: +65 6734 8352
Opening Hours: 11:00am – 10:00pm Daily, 9:30pm last order
For those unaware, this omakase burger is not exactly ‘omakase’ as how Japanese chefs would have used that word.
They specialize in authentic American ‘smashed burger’-style beef burgers, with hand-made patties ground fresh with their own proprietary blend of premium USDA Choice-grade cuts.
2 years of experimentation. No fillers. A soft bun created by a Japanese baker. Specially imported American cheese. A special sauce.
The specialties are the Omakase Cheeseburger ($19.90), Applewood Smoked Bacon Cheeseburger ($22.90), Deluxe Burger ($22.90) and newly launched Impossible Burger.
I liked its soft burger. You almost feel you want to be gentle with it and not squeeze too hard. I recommend one full bite, all the way, enjoying the pillow-like texture, down to its juicy beef patty.
The only thing is that the kiosk is hidden within Picnic, and not as visible in plain sight.
Relish
182 Cecil Street #02-12/13 @ Oasis of Frasers Tower Singapore 069547
Tel: +65 6904 5458
Opening Hours: 11am – 10pm (Mon – Fri), 10am – 3pm (Sat), Closed Sun
While Relish at Cluny Court is more burger-focused, you can see strong influences of Wild Rocket over at this new outlet.
Starting with the burgers, you can get choices such as the Wild Rocket Beef Burger ($15.20), Bacon and Cheese Beef Burger ($15.90), Mushroom & Double Cheese ($15.40) and Seafood Burger ($16.80).
The Wild Rocket Beef Burger ($15.20, added a sunny side up at additional $1.50) was quite a decently juicy one, spiced up with Sarawak pepper cream and sun-dried tomato relish.
This burger didn’t have the usual cheese, bacon or mushrooms. It didn’t need to, as the succulent and sumptuous beef patty – recommended medium rare, was the main star. Relish (Cecil Street)
Hans Im Glück
362 Orchard Road, Singapore 238887
Tel: +65 9750 1488
Opening Hours: 11am – 12am (Mon to Thu), 11am – 1am (Fri & Sun)
Hans Im Glück is an established German Burger Grill and Bar that originated from Munich.
Burgers are their forte, and they serve up an extensive menu of beef, chicken, vegetarian and vegan burgers priced from $14 onwards.
I liked that customers were given the option to choose our choice of bread from Sourdough, Multigrain or go Naked – without the bun.
Being a meat-lover, I was recommended the Hans Im Glück Beef Burger ($17) which came with parmesan cheese, parma ham, rocket leaves and balsamic glaze.
Generally, their rendition of European burgers turned out to be healthier than what I expected.
A difference to American-style burgers which are usually more greasy and ‘sinful’ due to the amount of cheese and sauces used. Hans Im Glück (Orchard Road)
Burger Joint Singapore
115 Amoy Street #01-03 Singapore 069935 (Entrance from the back on Gemmill Lane)
Tel: +65 6221 8648
Opening Hours: 11:30am – 11pm (Mon – Wed), 11:30pm – 12am (Thurs – Sat), 11:30am – 8pm (Sun)
Its choice of location is also quite mysterious, at Amoy Street but you got to find your way from the back at Gemmill Lane.
This place is a real replica of the original Burger Joint in NYC. I mean, they even have the same well-decked kitchen equipment and layout and the same music playlist as the original Burger Joint.
The menu is no fuss, with a choice of Hamburger ($13.10), Cheeseburger ($13.80), Bacon Burger ($15.10) with sides of Fries ($5.50), Milkshakes ($11.80), and Brownie ($4.80).
For the ultimate indulgence, go for the Double Bacon Cheeseburger ($27.40), and ask for “The Works” which will include lettuce, tomatoes, onion, pickles, ketchup, mayo and mustard.
Essentially everything.
The best part to me was the cheese, said to be sourced from the best dairy farms in America. The patty made from Nebraskan beef, though moist wasn’t fantastic – felt like it needed SOME light seasoning and more smokiness.
25 Degrees
Hotel G, 200 Middle Road Singapore 188980
Tel: +65 6809 7990
Opening Hours: 7am – 3am (Mon – Sun)
25 Degrees Burgers and Liquor Bar which originated from Los Angeles, is situated at an interesting location of Hotel G.
The place is so named after the precise temperature difference between a raw and well-done hamburger.
Burgers ($14 each) are simply labelled as Number One, Number Two, Number Three, Number Four, and Veggie Burger.
One to Three contain beef patties with different fillings, Four is a burger of seared Yellowfin Tuna with lettuce, crispy fried onions and spicy aioli.
I ordered the Number One, their signature with 200g USA Angus beef, creamy crescenza, gorgonzola, strips of smoky bacon, topped with slowly caramelised onions and finished with… Thousand Island.
The most distinctive feature to me, was not the beef patty, but the Crescenza cheese.
The aroma hits you as you take the burger close enough to your face, and gives a beautiful soft, creamy texture surrounding the patty.
WOLF Burgers
Changi City Point #01-43 5 Changi Business Park Central 1 Singapore 486038
Tel: +65 6902 0486
Opening Hours: 8:30am – 10:30am (Breakfast and Speciality Coffee, coffee continues from 10:30am to 11:30am, non PH, Mon – Fri)
11:30am to 9:30pm (Full Menu, Mon – Sun)
The star of WOLF Burgers is said to be the patty – produced in house with a secret recipe, to ensure a juicy, succulent burger always.
Started from the team of Carvers & Co., the burger kiosk from Pasarbella got so popular that they opened a stand-alone shop at Changi City Point.
They are known for “The WOLF Burger”, their version of a standard Cheeseburger. Best paired with some Korean-American inspired Kimchi Cheese Fries topped with kimchi, sour cream, cheese and chives.
There are two components that I enjoyed about the Magic Mushroom Burger ($13.90) – the provolone cheese which added fuller-buttery flavours with a semisoft texture; and sautéed truffle mushrooms which would ‘release’ that aroma as you take a huge bite into the burger.
