The Westin Singapore & Seasonal Tastes Review

Can I say “Welcome back Westin Singapore”? After a departure from Singapore for 12 years, it is back at the Marina Bay financial district, located on levels 32 to 46 of Asia Square Tower Two at Marina View.

The five-star Westin Singapore is essentially a business hotel, with 305 guest rooms and suites under Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide. But that won’t stop guests from having a staycation here due to its proximity to the Marina Bay and Chinatown districts. (Lao Pat Sat is a short walk away if you are hungry for local street-food supper.)

After checking in to a staycation at 3pm, I must say I am most impressed with its view – the tall glass-to-ceiling window helped. Depending on where you book, you are likely to face the Marina Bay, Raffles Place business district, or the more heritage Chinatown – all attractive urban views.

Taking a slow relaxing bath at the room’s tub facing office buildings or the expressways may be your idea of contrasting indulgence. Don’t worry, people can’t look in! (The white tea aloe bath sets are flowery fragrant to shower with.)

You may call this a ‘waste of time’, I actually spent most of my staycation just sinking into Westin’s famed Heavenly Bed with plush pillows, hiding under the luxurious fluffy duvet sheets watching movies.

While the outdoor infinity pool is smaller and shorter than expected, it is comforting to pamper in an afternoon tan or dip, also facing the Asia Square towers where you can see people hurrying away in their offices. Otherwise, find a best spot for a poolside selfie.

Now, on the parts I do not fancy: Rates are not exactly economical (putting all things in perspective) – SGD$345 (USD$272) not including tax and surcharge for a renewal opening package. At least it includes buffet breakfast, complimentary high-speed internet access, and double SPG starpoints, valid till 30 April 2014.

For travellers who need to travel by trains, both Downtown and Raffles Place MRT stations are a distance away. I tried walking from Raffles Place MRT to the hotel, and it took about 15-20 minutes, with a combination of getting above and underground.

Being in a CDB district would also mean difficulty in getting cabs at get-off-work peak hours.

Seasonal Tastes located on the 32nd level of The Westin is its signature dining venue, with prices at an affordable $35++ per pax for buffet lunch and $55++ per pax for buffet dinner.

Its winning features (other than pricing) are in its spacious setting with lovely panoramic views of the Singapore city. The five interactive kitchens are organised intuitively and you would just need to walk a straight line down without the meandering – starters are nearer the front and desserts are the back.

But I have to acknowledge that this is one of the few buffet breakfasts I been to not knowing what to eat, because there wasn’t food enough to attract. The variety is on the low side, and quality still requires fine-tuning.

The Westin Singapore wins on its view and comfortable rooms, though it seems that the selection of restaurants and food may not be their strength, yet.
