[Sydney] This “canteen” is technically a brunch-café located within the industrial area of Alexandria.
Alexandria was originally an industrial area, but it has undergone gentrification over the past few years.
You will find lots of trendy coffee shops and eateries around (such as The Grounds Of Alexandria), and now this.
Many successful Sydney cafes put in the extra effort on their theme and objectives, with loads of attention to details on menu and décor.
You will not miss seeing “wholefoods” and “organic” here, as the café has a strong focus on sustainability and biodynamics.
This place encourages health and wellbeing everywhere you look, from the lovely fresh ingredients on display through to the peaceful vibe they have created.
Starting with the interior, the space is very pleasant and cosy, with loads of pink accents from the furniture to plates.
Pot plants on tables, seven communal tables to sit at, big glass doors that allow natural light to spill in, stools and beach chairs, natural wood surfaces, relaxing music playing on the radio, fresh fruits and vegetables on display, exposed bricks and concrete ceiling with hanging lights.
It has a communal vibe, with six long wooden tables for visitors to sit at.
You can strike up a conversation with other people that also enjoy healthy lifestyles.
The menu is also designed to be shared. For example, the salads can be mixed and matched, and are served on a big plate.
The ingredients are organic, eggs are free range/biodynamic, packaging is biodegradable, and it caters to vegetarians and vegans.
Breakfast is very popular, but lunches are also great. Price is on the higher side though.
Dishes that may be offered during lunch (note they are seasonal and rotational) can include The Amazing Arifin’s Thai Beef Lemongrass Galangal Ginger Chilli (AUD28), Organic Free Range Chicken Tikka Masala (AUD25), Slow Roasted Grassfed Leg Lamb (AUD30) and Organic Inglewood Parmesan Chicken Schnitzel (AUD30).
I had the signature Parmesan Not-So-Scrambled Eggs (AUD22) with biodynamic eggs with fresh chilli (or real truffle oil), shaved parmesan cheese with avocado, tomato, baby spinach, fresh herbs and sourdough or organic basmati rice with grass fed butter.
The meal was are elegantly presented, looked very fresh and healthy, and actually a lot tastier that what I had expected.
You would have imagined that flavours would have been a lot more muted, but this was not.
Another must-get is the 6-hour Organic Chicken Brown Rice Congee (AUD16), which was warm and comforting for the colder winter season. The consistency was just right, and nuances of spiced ginger.
Somehow it tasted quite ‘Asian’ especially with the addition of chilli flakes, white pepper and shallots.
They do great coffee using Marvell Street, Datanali, Nicaragua beans and also have a selection of 18 different teas as well as some delicious juices, smoothies and tisanes.
