People on the web are saying Plain Vanilla Bakery offers one of the best, if not the best cupcakes in Singapore. So expectations became higher.

This cafe at Tiong Bahru’s Yong Siak Street is simplistically quaint and charming. Old school bicycles line the entrance, a big wooden table with benches as female customers type away on their laptop with a cuppa on side, a few toys here and there to add that sense of innocence and unworldliness.

I could spend half an afternoon here.

The Plain Vanilla folks take pride in their products, using the best of ingredients: French butter, pure Madagascar Bourbon vanilla, bittersweet Belgian chocolate, perfectly ripe bananas, no artificial preservatives.

Their cupcakes ($3.50, or $19 for 6) are popular and pretty, with the mainstay offerings including Carrot, Cinnamon Brown Sugar, Cookies and Cream, Dark Chocolate Ganache, Milk Chocolate Chip, Red Velvet, Chocolate Hazelnut, Milk Chocolate Banana, Strawberry White Chocolate and Salted Caramel.

We asked for recommendations, and ended up with Red Velvet (crimson-coloured light Valrhona cocoa cake with vanilla cream cheese frosting), Carrot (spiced carrot-steaked with vamilla cream cheese frosting) and Milk Chocolate Banana (chocolate chip-studded banana cake with milk chocolate frosting).

Plain Vanilla’s cupcake piping is unmistakable and frost smooth, creamy and delicate – indeed better than some of the other brands available locally. A tad too sweet.

The base however, is a different story and would have otherwise been a perfect bake. Dry, not fluffy or moist enough. Both my dining companion and I felt disappointed. Of the three, we were most okay with the Milk Chocolate Banana.

Was it Singapore’s weather? Was it the lack of real competition? Were we comparing too much with the Australian and American ones?

Their cupcakes were lovely, and the ambience was lovelier.
