[Hong Kong] Sun Tung Lok 新同樂 is the 1st non-hotel eatery and 2nd Chinese restaurant in Hong Kong to receive 3 Michelin stars (the first being Lung King Heen). Yet, the restaurant founded in 1969 by the Yuen family is surprisingly off-the-radar, at least to Singaporeans.
Compared to the other Michelin-awarded Chinese restaurants, I didn’t get the sense of glamour and magnificence upon enter the restaurant. Therefore Lung King Heen which had a harbour view, while Tin Lung Heen located at Level 102 of Ritz Carlton won in terms of grandeur and classiness hands down.
There were just 4 walls, some VIP rooms, and 3 booth seats (do ask for the more private booth seats when you reserve). For it to get 3 stars (now 2 stars), it could imply Sun Tung Lok’s food surely impresses.
Their Set Lunch Menu was surprisingly not pricey for its standard and location at Tsim Sha Tsui. At HK$298, you get 6 courses which include Pan-fried fresh chicken filet in homemade sesame gravy, Steamed seasonal vegetable with bamboo pith, 3 small dishes and 3 item-deluxe dessert.
Their Cantonese style dishes such as Rib of Beef with House Gravy, Stuffed Crab Shells and Roast Suckling Pig are popular with regulars.
I was thoroughly impressed by their dim sum creations, which strike a balance between being traditional in taste and innovative in terms of choice of ingredients. Every dim sum item I ordered was remarkable and a stamp of high quality.
Do order the Steamed Rice Flour Rolls (HK$68), which reminds me of the popular zha leong’ – fried dough sticks wrapped in ‘cheong fun’.
Sun Tung Lok’s version is a level up, with shredded turnip and ham covered within crispy beancurd sheets, which is further wrapped with silky smooth, almost translucent thin rice flours, then poured over with a special sauce. The combination of textures makes dining a thrill, at least that’s how I see it.
The Royal Dessert Platter (HK$188 serves 2) has some of the most amazing items – Bird Nest Glutinous Rice Balls stuffed with Custard, a donut-like fluffy Egg White Ball also with Salted Yolk Custard fillings and Osmathus Jelly. These are just 3 of the 6.
While the décor and publicity are understated, Sun Tung Lok offers unobtrusive tactful service with fresh dim sum skillfully and delicately made. Matched with an acceptable price point, it has become one of my favourite dim sum restaurants in Hong Kong.
