Waffle Slayer – Strangers’ Reunion Opens A Waffle Café Next Door

Strangers’ Reunion at Kampong Bahru is best known for their buttermilk waffle, and it makes sense to open a shop next door because the crowd does get overwhelming over the weekends. When something works, why not expand?

The vibes at Waffle Slayer are very similar to Strangers’ Reunion, with an industrial café look, mis-mash of vintage furniture with a live kitchen of sorts in the middle.

Fans of sweet waffle would be delighted to know there are 8 different types – the one that grabs attention include Matcha Buttermilk, Passionfruit White Chocolate, Banana Brulee and Red Velvet (all at $14.90).

There are two savories – Squid Ink Waffle with Smoked Salmon or Crispy Bacon ($18.90) – this comes with vanilla ice cream on top. The special, which I hear is good, is the Buttermilk Waffles with Chicken Schnitzel and Kaffir Lime Mayonnaise ($19.90).

I strangely feel out of place here, a 30-seater 80% filled with girls looking between 14-25 max, mostly in flower dresses (not forgetting to instagram with a priced top-down shot of their waffles). The other males in the room came with their girlfriends.

Service while severely short-handed was actually friendly and welcoming. A rare find because some service staff at the become-popular cafes can almost bark at customers.

The Squid Ink Waffle with Smoked Salmon with Poached Egg ($18.90) could be improved. The waffle texture was soft and fluffy, but overall dry and strangely tasteless – I felt tempted to pour some kind of sauce down, hollandaise, maple, even just chilli sauce.

Waitress asked “How’s the poached egg?” I said, “Errr… not bad.” Not wanting to break her smile (and heart).

To give her credit, she was making waffle, poaching eggs (a hot pot near some electrical wires – yikes), taking orders and serving drinks simultaneously. So to come out with this, really not bad.

The sweet waffle, a Red Velvet Buttermilk Waffle ($14.90) with chocolate fudge and vanilla ice cream fared better. I suspect that this is probably one of the better waffle found in Singapore (because several just cannot make it), but is way behind what Australian counterparts could serve – The slight crisp and melt-in-mouth flufiness.

Coffee was a sad sad story, pretty in cafe art, sour to the taste. Sour. Blah.

There was a long line outside Strangers’ Reunion, and there were still a few empty tables here. Wait, if I can order items at Strangers’ Reunion at Waffle Slayer, why are the people queuing up to an hour next door? Okay lah, but now you know.
